The Lez Get Real Top Ten: Ten Ways to Respond to Anti-Gay Remarks

Ten Ways to Respond
to Anti-Gay Remarks

#1
Remark:
The Bible says being gay is a sin.

Response:
The Bible says a lot of things.

#2
Remark:
Being gay is not natural. It goes against the design for humanity.

Response:
It may not be natural for YOU. Were you there when humanity was designed?

#3
Remark:
Gay people are sexual deviants, sex is for pro-creation.

Response:
Following this line of thinking would mean that married straight couples who can’t or don’t want to have children are sexual deviants also, and should have their marriage rights taken away too.

#4
Remark:
Marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman.

Response:
It is between a man and a woman right now, but same sex couples are human beings too. If these couples are willing to take on the same responsibilities of marriage as a straight couple, they should have equal rights and protection under the law.

#5
Remark:
Being gay is a choice and you shouldn’t choose to be gay.

Response:
Does it make sense that I would choose to live as a second class citizen, with no rights, begging for my dignity? I am who I am. Asking a gay person to choose to be straight is like asking a Zebra to lose it’s stripes and be a Pony.

#6
Remark:
Being gay is unacceptable behavior, you should have more chastity.

Response:
You don’t own me. I don’t tell you how to live your life, and I don’t think it would be fair to stomp on your rights just because I don’t agree with how you live.

#7
Remark:
If gay marriage is legal people will want to marry their pets, and schools will teach children that gay marriage is OK.

Response:
Straight people have been getting married (and divorced!) for thousands of years, yet still they aren’t marrying their pets. Plus, teachers are already teaching children of gay parents that straight marriage is OK.

#8
Remark:
Marriage has always been between a man and woman. We shouldn’t change that just because a small group of people complain.

Response:
Society has evolved to include all groups, no matter how under-represented they might be. It wasn’t that long ago when blacks couldn’t marry whites, and we couldn’t marry out of our own class. Times have changed and so should the marriage laws.

#9
Remark:
Supporting gay marriage will cause more people to be gay.

Response:
Gay marriage will allow more people to be who they are without the fear of being persecuted.

#10
Remark:
God hates gays.

Response:
God made me, YOU hate gays. That’s your hang up.

As a gay minister I feel obligated to remind the straight “christians” that there were over 200 laws in the bible relating to heterosexuals and only 6 relating to gays. I guess God felt there would be more problems with the Straights.

i luv #6, i’m going to get a t-shirt “YOU DON’T OWN ME!”. i’ve always gotten, “your a lesbian because you haven’t been with a real man, like me” to which i always roll my eyes and answer, “CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR UNIQUE RESPONSE, LET ME GO FLIRT WITH THAT SMART WOMAN OVER THERE, YOU IDIOT”.

To be perfectly clear… these are the TOP anti-gay remarks, yes most are religious, and are not ALL of the anti-gay remarks of course, but these are the TOP remarks that are made which is why they made the list. I would love to see more comments with anti-gay remarks YOU may have experienced, with your best response as well. No matter what religion, race, or orientation it is all our responsibility to speak up…

    Dante,

Actually my “response” is usually dealt with by “judging” them by a belief they don’t believe in, and when they laugh or attempt to discredit it point out to them that the same set of standards they use to discredit others stances and beliefs also condemns their own.

    mandm,

What about the hypocrite who has a plank in their own eye, but can’t stop obsession about the splinter in their fellow human’s eye (read: EVERY CHRISTIAN WALKING)?

True, but I’ve known more than a few Homophobic Athiests, so being an Athiest doesn’t always lead to enlightenment in that regard.(I’m an Athiest myself though)

The belief part crossed my mind too.

Notice how these responses in the article and many post center around religion.

Take religious belief out of the argument and there is none. No one can make an argument against gay right without using the bible or a religious view to wave around.

Amazing how one thinks their CHOICE of religious belief gives them the right to decide what the rest of us must believe. The arrogance of that is beyond excusable.

Interesting responses in the article but half of them presume that one believes in the judeo-christian mythology.

Re: question 7 — marrying your pet

Whenever my pet signs the papers, I’ll gladly marry him.

It is in my experience that a certain percentage (not all though) of Christians just need to hate some group of people. They choose Gays. They use the bible as freedom from the guilt of hate – that is the scary part. Don’t argue with them, they hate Gays – case closed. Certainly do defend yourself against their hate, using the law and whatever other means need be.

if being gay IS a choice , that would mean being straight is ALSO a choice. if not , wouldn’t that mean gay people are gods favored children . having given them a choice he didn’t give straight people!

My response to #5 is always “If it’s a choice to be gay it must be a choice to be straight. At what age did you make the choice to like the opposite sex?”

    mandm,

Hmm, you sad angry person….a God of judgement? That is a pretty cruel God, to create then judge – sounds a bit more like you. Consider a less anthropomorphic approach and do some serious theological and academic research.

God’s judgement is not just on homosexuals, but the murderer, thief, liar, fornicator, blasphemer, and all who are not saved through the blood of Christ.

Even the Catholic church married gays around the 15th century. Other cultures through time have allowed gay marraige. See #8

As a transsexual, I always got hit with

    “God does not make mistakes.”

    to which I always replied

“I’m not the one who said God made a mistake, you’re the one who said it.”
