They know that any legislation that curtails civil rights for one group that is allowed to stand, regardless of how they may personally feel about that minority, opens the door as precedent to legislate against the rights of another. Perhaps there’s another group out there who doesn’t like having Native American tribes own all those casinos, or business signs in only Spanish, Korean or Farsi, and perhaps we should do something about those obnoxiously ornate Mormon temples all over the place. And what about those Knights of Columbus? Does anyone doubt their intimate connection to the Roman Catholic Church? Perhaps a majority of us should pass a law so that the entire American Roman Catholic church is taxed as a private corporation consequent to the political activity of their Blessed Knights. Perhaps those of you who hate one minority and would deprive them of civil rights might reconsider your political stand (not your religious beliefs) if you consider the precedent being set by Proposition 8. It may be your very beliefs that become the next target for oppression despite your personal belief in their universality.

Whether you believe the Earth is flat, that Adam walked with dinosaurs, that Shiva had six arms, that crystals cure cancer, that fairies live in willows, that Jesus saves you from your sins, or that people choose their sexual identity, your freedom is protected by that Constitution you are trying to change. So, men like John Lewis (D-GA), Martin Luther King Jr., and the entirety of the Civil Rights Movement leadership, and their followers, should have shut up and allowed the police to beat them to death for speaking out? According to the nine marriage laws of the Celts, a marriage contract may be between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man, OR any multiple there of so long as all parties were willing.

Apparently in some of the more, shall we say, edited and forgotten texts of the Bible, marriage could be between one man and more than one woman. This was, in part, the basis of the Mormon push initially to allow for Polygamy.

So, NO, it was not defined as being between ONE man and ONE woman until, oh, about fifty years ago. It was considered a defacto connotation up until then, but really was not solidly defined by any major Christian religion until then since they believed in the sinfullness and criminality of homosexuality and that marriage was for procreation. And, even THAT set of connotations did not arise until five hundred years after the writing of the final chapter of the Bible when it was heavily edited by the Catholic Church of the time.

Fine tuning marriage will not change the basic substance of it. And, given that marriage is defined as “a contract between two or more individuals to make an economic whole” by most major dictionaries, what you are attempting to do is redefine marriage in the english language.

Even dictionaries dating back fifty years do not define marriage as being between specifically one man and one woman.

So, first of all, YOU are the one that wishes to redefine marriage. The second thing is, today, “gay” means homosexual. The ancilliary definitions are now about being happy. And while a car may be a wheeled vehical, the word has changed significantly since it was first used by the Welsh to describe a charriot.

I think you need to consider your REAL opposition to same-sex marriage because, really, if you are worried about a word, then you really have misplaced priorities.

And here is a word which has changed drastically in the last two centuries. Priviledge. Two centuries ago Priviledege meant, quite literally, Private Law. Now it means a perk.
