Until death do us part…the history

As I was driving to work, I noticed those pesky signs advocating THE darn proposition.

I suddenly remembered sitting at church and reading a story that made me feel like I wasn’t alone. I would turn to it on several occasions (while in church and especially when Anti-gay talk was ensuing), re-reading it over and over, and knowing this wasn’t your “sisterly, Christian love” this was two women IN LOVE. I would read this and imagine someday someone telling me exactly those romantic words:

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.

RUTH 1:16-17 and this is the love story between Ruth and Naomi. Ruth clung on to Naomi, she loved her, she didn’t want or need a man and she definitely did not want to leave her love, her boo. It is definitely a love story and it was definitely a vow: isn’t it ironic how this is coming straight from the bible and people who oppose gay marriage cite this very book?

Now some of you are going to tell me, well that is how YOU interpret it.

Yep, I completely agree and I say my interpretation is better than YOURS, in other words, you are also interpreting it too. You see? We fall back to: it is a matter of how you interpret the bible. I can tell you one thing, I am very close to my biological sister and if I were to tell her those words she would turn to me and tell me that is disgusting or ask me if I finally lost my marbles. I can’t see a heterosexual woman telling another heterosexual woman those words, unless there is some type of kinky feeling going on. This is same sex love people and it is in the bible. And not only were they not destroyed by God, they were blessed and if you finish reading the story, they became mommies. That is right folks, Ruth gave birth and Naomi nursed. Get that for going back to history. In regards to their son Obed, he became the grandfather of King David, whom was the love of Jonathan. (1 Samuel 18) Here we go again, people, if you don’t believe in homosexuality being genetic, go back to the bible. And to take this further, that is the lineage to Jesus Christ. WOW!

So, my fellow lesbians and married lesbians that are mommies, hold your head up high and remember we have history, and their names are Ruth and Naomi.

Now, if I can only find that special boo to whisper in my ear those very same words…

Yes, the baby had a daddy. His name was Boaz. Read the 4 chapters of Ruth. May question is did the intimate relationship continue after the marriage of Ruth to Boaz between the women.
    The verse was so beautiful.

    I just read it…interesting stuff.

“Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I PURCHASED to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day”

    That doesn’t seem so fun.

To QUEERS UNITED: i give you homework, read the book of RUTH it is only 4 chapters, but to answer your question it is in chapter 4 that you will find they became mommies verse 16: "And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it." i would like to add: upon reading this chapter, you don't find that Ruth was in love with the baby's daddy. hummmm, i wonder if they had baby's daddy drama? —->p.Johanna

Thank you for pointing out what I have time and time again…CHRISTians are decedents of CHRIST’s teachings…which preach about love, fairness, and equality.

Your interpretation (in my eyes) is the right one, we all take from the bible what we want, but you are using it as a message of love rather than hate or intolerance. BRAVO!

I am in no way a christian or really associate myself with the bible, yet in a nation of Christians this is good information to keep handy. Great article.

It’s unfortunate that priests, pastors, and others gloss over some of the love stories in the bible, and put their own spin on things. I really think that these priests, and such, should take a course in tolerance and love.

But, the thing they miss the most is that it is all about love. Instead of loving others, which is difficult and takes a lot of work, these modern day Pharisees practice intolerance, hatred and rail against “the sinners” that surround them. I have also found the Bible spends a lot of time telling us (yes, Buddhists do read the Bible) to work on ourselves to become more loving and more pure — but you don’t see a lot of that either. It also goes into some length to describe the dangers and downfalls of riches, but you wouldn’t know it when you drive by their super-churches or see their opulent lifestyles. In short, they have taken the Bible and cut and rendered it into a book that fits to their pre-conceived notions, desires and prejudices.
Besides Ruth and Naomi, I would also add David and Jonathan and even Christ and James. It’s about love… but you would never know it the way some of them act.

Wonderful post! I sure do prefer your interpretation! Almost makes me want to re-visit the bible to see what other gems are in there that we gloss over (or that so many preachers gloss over).

    p. Johanna,

Thanks for writing this. I’m not a Biblical scholar. However, this isn’t totally surprising.

As for the interpretation, there is an old saying- you can justify anything with the Bible and the Constitution. The Bible has numerous different verses which are interpreted differently today, or even just totally ignored now.

I didn’t know this, do you have any verses that show they were mommies? How did they get pregnant?
