There actually were a few gay-like characters from the beginning of comic strips. Mr. Batch, for example, from as early as 1907 was a single man who always ran from women and matrimony, yet had a strong male friend.

In 1924 Winnie Winkle the Breadwinner featured two "gay swains" named Algy Dear and Montomorency who may have been intentional.

And we mustn't forget what for my money was the best comic strip ever written, Krazy Kat. From 1913 to 1944 the strip ran, and the Kat's gender was never firmly established; George Harriman, the artist, toyed with us on this topic. The Kat was treated as a male at times, but he/she was in unrequited love with Ignatz the Mouse, who as all male. And he/she told his/her nephew in 1924 that he/she could be either a "unkil" or a "ent" to the kitten.

I've never seen a recognizable lesbian character in mainstream comic strips, though.
