Lez Ask the Femme: Do all femme lesbian want to have kids?

Jess,

I am a femme lesbian, and it seems like most femmes want to have kids. I don’t want kids, so am I less of a femme?

Tracy

Tracy,

That is a great questions and a common misconception I think. Now I am a femme and I had a child, both my partner and I wanted to have a child together. I believe that it is your personal preference on whether or not you want to have children. There are many butch couples that have kids and then there are many straight couples that do not have children.

We have these labels of femme, butch, gay, straight and sometimes I think we put additional labels on of having kids or not. Just because you are a femme lesbian does not mean that you automatically want to have children, your biological clock tells you and so does your heart.

I’m a femme and my then partner wanted to make a baby more than I did. We used her very butch uterus to make our bundle.

I wanted and am delighted to have a daughter, but birthing a baby wasn’t a make or break thing for me.

My partner and I don’t really identify as butch or femme–we’re both more middle-of-the-road–but looking at us, you’d say she’s more butch and I’m more femme. She was the one who wanted to start our family, long before I agreed to it. Also, the lesson of Thomas Beattie, the transgender man who made headlines with his pregnancy, should caution us against associating parental desire with any particular gender expression.
