OctoMom is Not A Lesbian

When I first heard that the second set of octuplets in the world were born right here in Southern California, I immediately wondered if the mother was a lesbian.

With many lesbian couples turning to IVF as an option for pregnancy, multiple births are common for lesbian moms who opt for taking that route. This is because doctors will commonly implant more than one embryo into a mothers womb because there is usually a good chance that the embryos will not survive into a viable pregnancy, and implanting multiple embryos raises the chances of having a successful pregnancy. Many times none of the embryos survive; but in this case ALL of the embryos survived. I followed the story closely in the papers, and the mother was staying very well hidden from the media, being referred to as ‘OctoMom’. In the first reports there was no mention of a father at all in any of the coverage. My curiosity was peaked and I paid close attention, waiting to see if there was a lesbian love interest waiting in the wings somewhere.

It was later revealed that OctoMom, Nadya Suleman, had two previous IVF treatments which resulted in triplets each time, so she now has fourteen children in total.

Nadya Suleman granted an exclusive interview to Ann Curry and was asked many questions by her that were on the people’s mind. The questions were along the lines of “what were you thinking”, “how can you support them”, “don’t you think this was irresponsible” etc. One question that wasn’t asked was whether OctoMom was a lesbian or not, but in that interview she did mention that the donor was a ‘close friend’. In a Fox news report yesterday, the grandmother of the octuplets, Angela Suleman said Nadya’s boyfriend was the biological father of all 14 children, but that she refused to marry him. “He was in love with her and wanted to marry her,” she said. “But Nadya wanted to have children on her own.”

So this confirmed it for me, OctoMom is NOT a lesbian.

She is just a straight woman who had fertility issues. Her choice to keep all of the viable embryos in all 3 of her fertility treatments was similar to the decision made by the mother of the McCaughey septuplets to decline ‘selective reduction‘ which would have reduced the number of fetuses carried to term. The McCaugheys were the recipients of many generous donations, including a house, van, diapers, nanny services, and even full college scholarships.

Nadya Suleman, however, has faced media scrutiny ever since her octuplets were born, and a full scale investigation into her life, finances, relationships, and family.

Because she is a single mother who is not currently employed, many people have expressed anger and disgust at her choice to get pregnant in the first place; especially after having 6 children already. The clinic which gave Nadya Suleman IVF is being investigated for implanting “too many” embryos and interviewer Ann Curry has come under scrutiny for possibly paying for her exclusive interview with the mother of the newborn octuplets. The fascination with this story continues, with bloggers and reporters alike speculating on the reasons behind OctoMoms choice to become a mom over and over again. Some are saying she is fashioning her life after that of celebrity mom Angelina Jolie, and might have had plastic surgery to alter her appearance to match the actress as well.

My speculations however have been put to rest.

OctoMom Nadya Suleman is not a lesbian in the closet, or out of the closet for that matter. She is simply not gay. OctoMom and her 14 children are simply one more hetero family with tons of dishes and laundry to do.
