Iowa Independent 03/09/09 – A bill was proposed by Sen. Matt McCoy, D-Des Moines, that would remove the words “husband” and “wife” from Iowa laws and replace them with the word “spouse.” The point of the legislation would be to properly respond should the Iowa Supreme Court rule that the state’s Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. If that is the case, same-sex marriage would be legal in Iowa and the language in laws would have to reflect that.
365Gay 03/09/09 – (London) Parents who removed their children from a London elementary school over lessons marking LGBT history month could face prosecution, officials say. The UK observes gay history month in February each year and schools are encouraged to mark it with special classes as a way to teach tolerance. More than 30 students were pulled out of classes at the George Tomlinson School in East London. The area is made up mainly of immigrant families, many of them Muslim.
Indian city to build trans toiletsPink News UK 03/09/09 – The Indian city of Chennai is to build new toilets for trans people. Officials from the Chennai Municipal Corporation have identified three areas with the largest trans populations which will benefit from the new facilities. The move is part of a pilot project to recognise the considerable trans community in south and central Chennai.

Queers United 03/11/09 – Blue Ducks, a threatened species which are native to New Zealand, look set to die out in the UK after Cherry, the last remaining female at a bird sanctuary in West Sussex, failed to mate with two males, named Ben and Jerry, at the same compound. “Neither male duck appeared interested and are now inseparable at the Arundel Wetland Centre, leaving Cherry to her own devices.”

Oral arguments in Kathryn Kutil and Cheryl Hess’ appeal are scheduled Wednesday. The lesbian couple are challenging a November ruling by Fayette County Circuit Judge Paul Blake to place the now 15-month-old girl under the care of a heterosexual couple who might adopt her. State law allows a single person or a married couple to adopt.

Pinks News UK 03/11/09 – An official in the city of Rīga, Latvia, has called for religious groups to ‘ignore’ the city’s upcoming gay and lesbian march, saying that scant attention may dissuade organisers from holding future events. This year’s event will be the first Baltic Gay Pride – officially titled Baltic Friendship Days – which joins the LGBT communities of the three Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It is scheduled to run from the 15-17th of May.

The Sundance Film Festival’s new artistic director has been with its parent organization for 20 years, building its global reach with new technologies and fostering diversity in programming. Actor Robert Redford, who founded the Sundance Institute in 1981, said Cooper “brings to the position an infectious enthusiasm as well as a deep understanding of the Sundance brand and culture. Forward thinking, he is a natural choice of succession to lead the Festival into the 21st century.”

Uzi Even and Amit Kama, who married in 1994 in Canada, are the first same-sex male couple in the country whose right of adoption has been legally acknowledged. Their son, Yossi Even-Kama, 30, moved in with them at the age of 16, after his family could not accept he was gay.

The 17-year-old, who has not been named, does not wear dresses because she sees them as expressing a sexual identity she does not embrace, court filings said. According to reports, Lebanon High School has a special dress code for prom that requires female students to wear a formal dress.
