George Takei and Wanda Sykes Join The Fray On Same-Sex Marriage

800px-george_takei_chicago_gay__lesbian_pride_2006The fight for marriage equality in California is moving forward. That is the flat out statement that actor George Takei has made. Takei and his husband Brad Altman married prior to the marriage ban going into effect, and they remain married because of the California Supreme Court’s ruling on this issue.

“I am confident that if we go through this again, we will ultimately prevail and our [State] Supreme Court will go into the dust of history,” Takei said. He also believes that there is no equality or victory in the declaration that those eighteen hundred marriages that occurred before the ban took place were still considered valid.

Takei is not the only high powered celebrity to come forward and vent their anger over this ruling. Wanda Sykes, who recently made waves at the White House Press Corps Dinner, married her wife in October. Sykes came out at a rally protesting Prop 8 three weeks later.

“I got pissed off. They pissed me off. I said, ‘You know what? Now I gotta get in your face.’ And that’s what we all have to do now. They pissed off the wrong group of people. They have galvanized a community…Instead of having gay marriage in California, we’re going to get it across the country,” she is on the record as saying.

Indeed, Sykes was among a nice list of celebrities who marched on Tuesday after the decision was handed down. She was joined by Drew Barrymore, James Franco and Pink, and more than likely many more. Sykes will not be at the protests that occur Wednesday night, as she will be traveling.

Sykes is a regular on The New Adventures of Old Christine, which was recently renewed by CBS, and a regular voice on Back at the Barnyard, which runs on Nickelodeon.

George Takei is most famous for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the Star Trek franchise. Sulu was one of the earliest positive portrayals of an Asian character in television. In the most recent Star Trek film, Hikaru Sulu was taken over by Korean actor John Cho.

Sykes and Takei join the growing protests over the ban against same-sex marriage.
