It is to my understanding, that the outsiders looking in on the LGBT struggle seem to think we should be celebrating.
Apparently we have a lot of reasons to be proud. I say let’s weigh our options here. We currently at the time of this article have five States in America (out of 50) where we can legally marry. Now for those of us who don’t live in Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts and more recently New Hampshire – we still have limited options.
Some same sex couples wish to marry for the sake of politics just because we can.
Than there’s the other portion of traditional folks (because yes, the LGBT community can be traditional) who want to have a beautiful wedding after completing the legalities of matrimony. Knowing the state of our economy, can most of us even afford to get married? The traveling costs, the license, the actual wedding, and of course kids, families, and homes that already need to be kept up. Who can afford to hop around the country to enjoy a union that could and should be able to happen right at home? I’m not bitter nor ungrateful about what we have acquired thus far, 10% of the country equals better than zero. I just worried about this being some sort of scheme to deter us from what we passionately wish to achieve.
It is completely justifiable for one to question the motives of our great government.
There seems to be a common misunderstanding of the LGBT community as a whole. When we are killed in the process of a hate crime, it is accepted as a robbery gone wrong. When we work to pass a bill against hate crimes and 175 members of congress vote against extending protections to LGBT Americans, we have a problem. When 17 of those votes come from democrats and 8 democrats don’t even bother to vote we really have to be worried, not proud. We have to worry about being targeted and not having enough people to make sure justice is served. What about our youth? Without enough protection being offered we must focus on our youth and how they deal with these issues. Suicide is not the way out! Maybe that’s not what we should worry about, because in the end the hate crimes bill was passed. For we Americans though, we know justice has and always will be a numbers game.
To the dismay of the extremists, republicans, and folks who think crimes against LGBT are a “hoax”, the numbers on our side are coming together.
We are joining forces and advocating far and beyond for our rights here on the home front. Its been found that the commitments and promises made by Obama to the LGBT community have been erased from the white house. It’s left to us to expand our organizations, picket, and demand state by state, civil rights and equality for all. We stand up against the hate with love in our hearts, so despite what “they” think we do have reasons to be proud!
