New Hampshire became the latest state to embrace same-sex marriage when the House approved a measure which would strengthen the protections for religious institutions. The bill has the approval of Governor John Lynch, who is expected to sign it. New Hampshire becomes the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriages, and the third by legislature. Governor Lynch will become the second governor to sign legislation into law allowing for marriage equality. The vote in the House was 198-176; the vote in the Senate was 14-10.
The bill was helped by the addition of a new representative from Lebanon, NH, the sight of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Andy White won a special election last night.
With New Hampshire legalizing same-sex marriage, the only remaining state in New England without marriage equality is Rhode Island where Governor Donald Carcieri supports the National Organization for Marraige. Rhode Island citizens, however, support same-sex marriage.
Vermont, Maine, Iowa, Connecticut and Massachusetts all have legalized same-sex marriage.
