Harvey_Milk_in_1978_at_Mayor_Moscone's_Desk_cropOn 17 September, Dr. Rachel Maddow discussed on her show the rather rare emotional statement made by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Her guest to discuss this was Cleve Jones, a colleague of the late Harvey Milk and the man who found his body. Cleve Jones has been an activist for many years. In the course of the segment, Dr. Maddow discussed not only Speaker Pelosi’s view of the violence as being not unlike that of the time surrounding the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, but also the response out of Republican Minority Leader John Boehner. The reaction of the GOP is that they are not stoking the fears, hatred and anger from ordinary people, but that there are legitimate concerns regarding the policies of President Barack Obama.

Dr. Maddow made did this segment on the day that Bill O’Rielly came out in support of a government run public option and the day before Geroldo Rivera bluntly informed someone on Fox and Friends that it was not alright to compare Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. While the Republican politicos may be unwilling to start pushing back against those who are threatening violence against the government, however veiled that may be, it begins to look like what Dr. Maddow suggested in her segment, and what Speaker Pelosi said in the press conference, may indeed be coming to pass simply via an organic discomfort with the anger and the rhetoric that has permeated the healthcare debate to this point.
