Mary Cheney Expecting Second Baby

Mary Cheney, the openly gay daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, and her long-time partner, Heather Poe, have confirmed that they are expecting their second child in mid- to late November, according True/Slant’s Kate Klonick.

Cheney gave birth to her first child, Samuel David Cheney in May of 2007.

You may remember the last time Mary was expecting, she drew the wrath of Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who wrote a notorious op-ed for Time magazine called “Two Mommies Is One Too Many,” slamming Cheney’s decision to start a family.

“With all due respect to Cheney and her partner, Heather Poe, the majority of more than 30 years of social-science evidence indicates that children do best on every measure of well-being when raised by their married mother and father. That is not to say Cheney and Poe will not love their child. But love alone is not enough to guarantee healthy growth and development. The two most loving women in the world cannot provide a daddy for a little boy–any more than the two most loving men can be complete role models for a little girl,” said Dodson.

“This is a baby… This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child… Every piece of remotely responsible research that has been done in the last 20 years has shown there is no difference between children raised by same-sex parents and children raised by opposite-sex parents; what matters is being raised in a stable, loving environment,” Cheney said in reply to Dodson.

Cheney, who lives in Great Falls, VA, was a principle at the Washington DC based consulting and public relation firm, Navigators Global and served as a senior campaign aide in both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. Recently Chaney announced that she would be leaving Navigators Global to begin a new consulting firm with her sister, Liz after she returns from maternity leave sometime next year.
