Representative Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin testified yesterday before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs regarding the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act. The act would extend benefits to domestic partners of all federal employees. Rep. Baldwin made the point that she, herself, is a lesbian federal employee. Granted, she was elected to the post rather than hired, but her benefits are also curtailed since she is still a federal employee. Her benefits are not transferred to her partner, Lauren.
Representative Baldwin also made a very valid point. While Lauren is not subject to the benefits of Ms Baldwin being a Representative, she is not obligated by the laws restricting spouses of Members of Congress either. An unscrupulous Member of Congress could easily take advantage of that.
What follows is Rep. Baldwin’s testimony. It is a long clip; however, quite informative.
