Yale, The Harry Potter Alliance, And Others Come Out For Marriage Equality in Maine

325px-Seal_of_Maine.svgThe final weeks of the push to protect marriage equality are bringing out supporters from places as diverse as Yale and Hogwarts. Yes, that is correct, Yale is setting up a phone bank to help get out the vote in Maine to vote down the proposed ‘voter veto’ which would put an end to marriage equality in Maine for at least a little while. Fans of the Harry Potter books and movies are also going to be getting out in force to help defeat the measure known as Prop 1.

Members of the Harry Potter Alliance are pushing for marriage equality. Soon after the publishing of the final book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, it was revealed by J. K. Rowling that Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts, was gay. The HPA is a group dedicated to turning a love of the Harry Potter books into activism which would make the world a better place. This, of course, has caused a number of religious leaders to cry foul. Of course, most religious groups have never embraced Harry Potter largely because of the witchcraft and wizardry aspect of it.

Of course, the religious leaders are busier working on funneling money into trying to enforce bigotry against a minority group in this nation than helping the poor and needy in the same way that Rev. Guy Blair is. Rev. Blair has donated fourteen items of silver, some dating back to the 1790’s, to help raise money to feed the poor. The minimum bid on the items is $21,000, but it is possible that it will fetch higher, and he is hoping for around $50,000. The money would go to benefit St. John’s the Evangelist Church shelter in Green Bay, and would cover the shelter’s expenses for a few weeks. The auction is being run by Heritage Auctions.

To date, those opposed to marriage equality in Maine have raised roughly $1.1 million, with the bulk of that money coming from either the Roman Catholic Church or the National Organization for Marriage. Together, they have raised more than $600,000. Imagine how many people that sum could feed.

Religion has also begun to be used against the opponents of marriage equality with Liberty for Maine and Virtual Galt putting out a special version of the “Sermon on the Mount”. This edition of one of Jesus Christ’s most famous speeches points out how it applies specifically to the LGBT community.

Currently, Maine’s voting population appears poised to vote against the voter veto, and it is quite possible that the ballot measure will probably be defeated. If it is, the attitude among those opposed to marriage equality that whenever the issue is taken to the voters, it is defeated. Of course, they forget that this issue did go to the voters in Arizona where it was defeated the first time, but then put before the voters again in order to get it passed.
