Breaking: McDonnell Projected To Win in Virginia

11/03/09-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Attorney_General_Bob_McDonnell_and_Coy_Barefoot_croppedBob McDonnell is projected to win the governor’s race in Virginia. It was not unexpected since Craigh Deeds ran a weak campaign and was not liked in upstate Virginia. McDonnell was expected to win despite the surfacing of a variety of problematic views from his past including rather severe views on LGBT rights. The turnout was light, and had little to do with President Barack Obama. The turnout was largely in the direction of the Republican base, and the Democrats were not largely energized.

Deeds, who comes from the south of the state, ran a campaign that did not tack towards to the President, and did not capitalize upon the popularity of Obama.

The turnout was largely in the direction of older, more conservative voters. Young, minority, and liberal voters did not turn out in any kind of force.
