Chicago Cubs Get Lesbian Owner

11/2/09-by Paula BrooksWrigley Field
Friday, The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, the founder of Omaha, Neb.-based TD Ameritrade, paid $845 million to buy a 95 percent controlling interest in the Chicago Cubs, their ballpark, Wrigley Field, and 25 percent of Comcast Sportsnet….

And with that purchase, The Windy City Times is reporting that the Chicago Cubs, possibly Major League Baseballs unluckiest team, will be the first team with an openly gay owner, because among the purchasers is Laura Ricketts, an open lesbian.

Laura Ricketts, 41, has a Philosophy degree from University of Chicago and a law degree from the University of Michigan.

Ricketts a co- founder of Ecotravel, a company aimed at promoting nature-based travel, serves on the board of directors of Lambda Legal.

She’s also a major donor to Chicago LGBT organizations like the Howard Brown Health Center and Center on Halsted and campaigns heavily for marriage rights. In fact, she and her partner, Heidi, are marrying in 2013.

Maybe with a lesbian at the helm the club can turn things around… the Cubs have not won it all since 1908 and have not even been to the World Series since 1945.
