Time To Boycott Maine Lobster- After All, God Says Consuming It Is An Abomination
11/04/09-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
If Maine wants to abide by God’s Law, then it is time that they abide by God’s Law. The Bible is clear- shellfish is an abomination. It is not to be eaten. It is time that the LGBT community and their allies help ensure that the people of Maine are not breaking God’s Law and helping to ensure that a group of people do not sully their souls by catching those crustaceans known as lobsters and it is time to put them off or menus. If the Catholic Church and the National Organization for Marriage can buy out the Maine vote, then it is time that we stop buying Maine’s lobsters. Obviously, the citizens of Maine have another product that they can sell, so they do not need for people to buy their lobsters.
Leviticus is clear. Lobster, as a shellfish, is on the list of unclean and forbidden animals to be eaten. Lobsters have neither fins nor scales and are not considered to be clean.
It is the duty of the LGBT Community to ensure that those who seek to inhabit the shadows and hide their beliefs behind a veil of secrecy share in the cleansing of a group of people who put their souls at risk to harvest unclean animals for the consumption of others.
The time has come to not buy Maine lobster.
After all, it is God’s Law that it not be consumed.

This will accomplish nothing and we have a lot of gay owned businesses in southern maine this would be a double slap in the face to them and totally unfair especially in Ogunquit. We need to move there to balance the equation.
Then, Michael, either tell your legislators to strip the Catholics of their exemptions for advocating a political matter, or pull up stakes. Tell the legislature to repass the law, and to force NOM to either open their donor lists before hand or face a ban on their money coming into the state.
Until then, I say boycott Maine lobster.
I disagree with you, Michael. Hit Maine in the pocketbook for being haters, and they will think twice before they interfere in the lives of others again.
Are you kidding accomplish nothing. Clearly you have no idea about the power of boycott. During the height of apartheid in South Africa, the African people were so aggrieved at not haveing the vote and equality that they were prepared to do anything to bring the apartheid government t its knees. True revolution involves sacrifice by thise who are aggrieved. So the Africans boycotted the busses which were government owned and woke up at 3.00 am to walk three- four hours to work and then home again. They supported sanctions and lost their jobs as a result. That is what they sacrificed for their dignity. Its that typical attitude of not willing to take things to the nth degree or to have any discomfort that keeps us bound by the chains of inequity.
I believe we should picket every single restaurant in the country that buys and boils MAINE lobsters. Especially those restaurants located in areas frequented by LGBT community. I believe we should all be calling for the BAN of Divorce – see my article on LGR at http://lezgetreal.com/?p=22738 to ensure that consservatives put their money where the mouths are…if they want their sanctity of marriage all to thenmselves and its such a big deal, then they should prohibit divorce – in truth that is the greatest enemy of “untill death do us part.”
Agreed, besides, lobster is delicious.
If you want to make waves, then stage sit-ins at large churches. Large numbers of LGBT should not leave after the service is over, that way the local police will have to remove you and cause a huge scene. Be sure to let MSM know beforehand.
Being a Mainer, having volunteered for the campaign, and worked straight through the Get Out The Vote effort, let me be the first to tell you that this is extremely misguided. Especially since I have one friend who lives on an Island Down East, and that Island of lobster/fishermen voted 2:1 in favor of gay marriage.
Further, what about all of us who fought incredibly hard FOR marriage? I live here too. I am hurt by economic sanctions too.
Then it is time to start pressuring the legislature to do something about those who flaunt the law and equality in order to do things like pass around collection plates in church.
Amen! Hit the bigots where it hurts…in their wallets!
Hit the bigots where it hurts – what is more hypocritical than voting to ban gay marriage and then going out and getting divorced, or working in the divorce field after you have voted vs. gay marriage. we should track down the bigots and expose them.
Since gay people in certain places do not receive equal protection under the law but still have to pay the full level of taxes I think they should have their taxes reduced by 10% or so to compensate them for loss of legal and civil rights.
They can’t really lose what they never had………And with the new hate crime bill, they have better than equal protection under the law. So they can’t marry. Big deal, half of marragies end in divorce anyway
I’ll join your boycott! I’m a vegetarian, though, so I already consume zero lobster, from Maine or anywhere else. What other products come from Maine that I can boycott? I’ve been trying to think of one all morning. I was planning a New England cruise this year, and I’ve already nixed the ones with a stop in Maine on their itinerary. What else can I do?
write to Maine reps and ask them to sponsor a Ban on divorce
When I look at many of the comments – I am sad – so many of you take the opportunity to write and yet you defy the power of the pen with your inane -nonsensical -inept -input… shame
Do you guys realize how stupid and misplaced this anger is? Maine legislature had the balls to bring this issue up and it’s basically split 50 – 50 with the residents, just like everywhere else. If we’re only eating food from states that have passed gay marriage when brought to a popular vote then we’ll last what, like 3 days max?
The war has to start someplace… looks like Maine is the place
This is such a foolish call to action. I live in Southern Maine, Portland to be exact, and stand firmly behind the basic human right for gay couples to marry. In fact, as an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, I stand ready to help gay couples get there. The problem is that by stating that Maine wants to abide by gods law, is a terrible blanket statement about a state of nearly 1.3 million people, and makes the author sound like a total bigot. Lobsterpeople are like all other communities of people, in that they are a varied group, plenty of them voted No on 1, making a clear statement for human rights. As I write this, a good friend and coworker, who grew up in a commercial fishing family, sits next to me, and not only did the two of us attend the No on 1 Rally last night, but his parents also voted No on 1. I am mad as hell about the loss, but to generalize about, and punish a group of fishermen, without any real data to back your thinking up, you are acting in a hateful manner, very much similar to the way the close minded dicks over at Yes on 1 have behaved. I know your mad, but don’t punish a group who has already had a tough economic year as it is. Why don’t you try using the blessing of having a public voice to do some good, not harm.
I am currently in Maine… Portland to be exact and I see your state’s economy has two wheel sin the ditch and it wont take much to put the other wheels in that ditch… the people that voted yes should have realize that there could be more consequences to their vote then just making some of the people in Maine second class citizens
don’t blame Maine or the businesses there, blame the groups that went into Maine and campaigned against gay rights
I blame the bigots in Maine that voted yes
I campaigned fiercely for No on 1 at my blog and gave to No on 1. It is wrong to “blame Maine” for the turnout. Many worked hard to uphold LD 1020. They knocked doors, made calls, raised money, and helped however they could. When you punish Maine you punish them too. 48% of us voted no. Not far from half of Maine.
North Haven, an island with a lot of lobstermen, voted overwhelmingly NO (69% to 31%) Please check your facts before you decide to launch a campaign to destroy the livelihood of so many.
Oh…you mean like the bigots in Maine should have checked the the fact that the queers won’t be pushed around anymore … and the fact that it won’t take much of a boycott on anything to hurt Maine because their economy is so in the toilet… before they vote to take away equality
I think all the EU should boycott EVERYTHING American until Americans start treating their gay and lesbian citizens with something more than a third class status and America quits policing the world on their civil rights issues while neglecting their own. Americans needs to be brought to it’s knees so that perhaps they will learn to bring each other up more (on occasion) instead of constantly fighting each other and always tearing each other down. 9/11 and Katrina only affected a small group of people. If something really bad were to happen, perhaps Americans would forget about these petty things that in the long run don’t really matter in the first place. I doubt even something so tragic would affect them, but perhaps. As a whole, Americans are indeed stupid. And gay and lesbians don’t fight nearly hard enough for what they say they believe in. Obviously the things you say are so important to your life and well-being aren’t really, otherwise you would cause little more commotion. You are probably comfortable with your third class status more than you are willing to admit and enjoy wallowing in your misery more than actually doing something about it.
PU$$IES…Learn how to really FIGHT for what you want.
Why punish Nova Scotians?
Most Maine lobster is actually being resold as”maine lobster” but it’s actually Nova Scotia Lobster.
They produce a better lobster due to the colder water.
What do I know…..at my work we only resell and label it “Maine” lol
I’d change those labels if I was Nova Scotia
A great example of reverse Poe’s Law. There is a great metaphor in the Boycott Maine Lobster because God Says So argument. Whether we actually boycott Maine lobster or not, the point is clear. It is ridiculous to legislate solely on a Biblical/religious interpretation. Morality shouldn’t be judged by your strict confinement to the rules, but instead, by your kindness to others.
Well said Jaysays
you straight guys make it easy
Derek Viger,
Please actually read what I am saying. Then, I suggest, you read it again and see if you actually catch the point of this article. If anyone actually boycotts lobster over sarcasm, then I hate to say it, they were going to anyway.
After reading the comments it doesn’t seem like many people see it as sarcasm. There is a movement that is taking this boycott very seriously
Derek,
If they take it seriously, then they take it seriously. You want to blame my sarcasm for what happens, then fine. The way I see it, people would be looking for someone- anyone- to say ‘let’s boycott something’. If they don’t get the rest of this, then, sadly, they are missing the real point here.
