Vote In Maine Heads Towards Upholding Marriage Equality

weddingMaine’s Question 1 was an vote that had national implications. Should it fail, it would be the first time that the voters had ruled against the attempt to put an end to marriage rights. Often times, the push to repeal the law seemed like a total replay of the Prop 8 campaign, especially since the ads were often lifted directly from California’s battle. One rather comic ad talked about having to prevent the spread of those horrible East Coast Massachusetts liberal ideas given that the states would be touching each other if New Hampshire was not in the way. It is a half hour drive from Maine to Massachusetts.

For much of the night, the vote was in the direction of the No on 1 campaign. Only a couple of times did it drift into the Yes category. An hour and a half after the polls closed, the results were 52% No 48% Yes.
