Annise Parker Facing Anti-LGBT Forces In Runoff To Become Houston’s Mayor

12/10/09-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
547px-Annise_ParkerIt was not a major issue when she ran for city controller, but now that Annise Parker is running for mayor, the conservative and religious groups are more than willing to do anything they can to prevent that from happening. The reason why is that Ms Parker is a lesbian. In her site bio, which is full of the normal run of information regarding her, is contained this simple statement- “”Annise Parker and her life partner, Kathy Hubbard, have been together since 1990. They have two children.” The fact that they have been together for more than most marriages last, and that they have raised two children is something of a threat to the anti-LGBT forces in the country. This weekend, Anise Parker could become the first openly gay mayor of Houston. Polls currently show her with a slight lead over her rival for the job.

In fact, the controversy over Parker’s sexuality has put her rival Gene Locke in a very delicate situation with Conservatives supporting him over anyone else. In fact, Locke’s campaign finance director Ned Holmes and one of his main contributors donated heavily to fliers which denounced Parker for being lesbian. Kim Devlin, a campaign adviser for Mr. Locke issued this in a statement: “Gene is disappointed and wishes that Ned Holmes had not made that contribution. Gene has been very clear with his supporters to not participate in divisive campaigning. Gene Locke has fought against bigotry his entire life and knows that there is no place for it in this campaign and this city.” However, some two hundred Houston pastors told the Houston Chronicle: “National gay and lesbian activists see this as a historic opportunity. The reality is that’s because they’re promoting an agenda which we believe to be contrary to the concerns of the community and destructive to the family.”

For Locke, it is a delicate balancing act trying to not distance the substantial LGBT Community in Houston while not distancing the Conservatives he hopes will vote for him.

In truth, the issues that may end up bringing in voters are far from those social issues which normally galvanize people in better economic times. Annise Parker has a long and proven record of fiscal responsibility, and given the current economic situation, that is more than likely going to draw in people to vote for her rather than for Locke no matter how many anti-LGBT fliers are handed out. Right now, many people in Houston are scared of losing their jobs and healthcare rather than worrying about whether or not Ms Parker is lesbian. In fact, Ms Parker has made a strong point to keep to the issues at hand and explaining her record than she is about answering attacks upon her sexuality by people with long track records of going after gays and lesbians for political gain. Back in November, Parker stated “I know there are folks ascribing a lot of different things to this campaign. The simple fact is: I am the most qualified candidate in this race and I intend to be the next mayor of Houston and I’m in the best position to lead our city.”

The runoff is set for 12 December, which is Saturday.

  1. MS Hankinson

The citizens of Houston and Texas, in general, are traditional conservative people with moral ideology. Homosexuality is not considered “main stream” by anyone except the radical liberal, progressive socialist idiots in SF and NY. The rest of the nation merely tolerates the less that 3% of the population who engage in the perverted behavior of the “gay” community. A moral foundation is what is lacking throughut our society and therefore the citizens of Houston should not vote her into office for anything.

      MS Hankinson-

Those who lie in the name of a supposed truth destroy the very moral argument that they profess to believe in. If Truth is real, then it does not need a bodyguard of lies to protect it.

    • “I’m the only candidate in this race with the knowledge and experience to lead our city from the first day in office – the only one with a record as a fiscally responsible leader who understands the budget and the financial situations of our city,”Annise Parker said.

Beyond that MS Hankinson your arguments are simply bigoted, non sequitor and quite frankly contrary to the best interest of the City of Huston

    • a major pain

To MSHankinson, Your very short and concise words is in a nutshell the best i’ve ever heard or read. Thank you. I’m going to have to remember that myself. oh yeah a major pain said that

    • a major pain

Your question does bring up a good point for discussion: Did Acorn or some like group have a part in this election? It has come to light that there were voting irregularities that gave Americans a ‘Korean-style Dear Leader’, you know dead people voting and all. So what part in your election did some nefarious acorn-like group have? Makes me go hmmmm. the major pain strikes again ps: yall were doing so good. as an outsider looking in you should have set boundaries on how much you want. but you didn’t. ok you want to be in the spotlight? so here we are and now you don’t like it. hmmmm. pps: i do not believe you are born abnormal. you have ‘remade’ GOD’s creation into an abnormal, or that’s the way you see it anyway. but you can still turn around. that is a whole other subject. most people in this country were accepting your self-analysis (i never did), but have grown weary of your power grabbing. a few years ago, i can remember saying something like ‘yall should be getting your foot off that accelerator soon.’ too late. now we want it back. we want it all back. and we do not negoiate with terrorists. ooops did i say too much? ppss:hey gotta run cuz in case you forgot i’m in the business of taking back my country. too too la loo (i don’t know if that is the way that is spelled by i figga you’d like that)

    • How about some coherence next time you put a post upon our blog? Or shall I, next time, just go ahead and dump your comments into the commode? Incidentally, trying to mind fuck me doesn’t work since, even though I have written quite a lot about my opinions on this blog, I have a tendency to be rather hard to read and comprehend.

  2. a major pain… I am sure the aliens were let out of their confinement at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and sent down to Houston to effect the out come of this election…. Because in your mind the bulk of the American people just have to agree with you.

and this wac-a- doodle crazy talk of yours is what will keep you in the fringes where you belong… no one likes crazies and as long as you talk this ‘Korean-style Dear Leader’ shit, you will remain in the realm of political nutballry in the American voters minds.
