Both Representative Barney Frank and Lt. Dan Choi have come out swinging in favor of Representative Joe Sestak. Rep. Sestak is running to unseat Senator Arlen Specter in the Democratic Primary. Indeed, there is a possibility that Rep. Sestak could unseat the Senator who changed parties in order to avoid a potentially difficult primary battle against Republican possible candidate Pat Toomey. Polling indicates that Sestak would likely have a better chance of winning against Toomey than Specter. This is largely due to the fact that many Pennsylvanians view the party switch in a negative fashion.
According to Rep. Frank at CBS:
“Joe Sestak is a true Democrat who cares about the working families that have been hit hardest by the failed economic policies of the Bush Administration. He’ll be a reliable vote for Pennsylvania’s next generation instead of having the same loyal Bush Republican we’ve seen over the past generation. I have to say I don’t think it did our profession any good for someone to announce that he switched parties purely so he could survive.”
In his statement of support for Sestak, Lt. Choi stated in a press release reprinted on Pam’s House Blend:
“Putting the Army-Navy rivalry aside, I’m here to support Joe Sestak. Joe understands that equal rights for gay and lesbian people is the civil rights test of our generation. As the highest ranking Veteran ever elected to Congress, he spent 31 years serving our country in the Navy fighting for our rights. He has been a leader in working to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and as Pennsylvania’s next Senator, Joe Sestak will continue to put principle over politics.”
Representative Sestak has been a strong opponent with regards to the law known as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. In fact, as a retired Admiral, Sestak even went so far as to testify regarding repeal of this law. He is also in favor of repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, as well as a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act as a number of other important LGBT issues going through Congress currently. The last available polls showed that Sestak was gaining on Specter in the primary. When Sestak first announced he was running for Senate, it was seen as being unlikely that he could win, but as the Primary comes closer and his name is more widely known, Sestak could end up defeating Specter.
Rep. Sestak is the highest ranking former member of the United States military to serve in Congress.
