Lawyer Sues Law Firm Over Harassment And Discrimination Over Her Sexual Orientation

Lawyer Julie Kamps is suing her former employers law firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson for the sum of $50 million. According to Ms Kamps, she was subjected to “repulsive harassment and discrimination” because of her sexual orientation and gender expression. Ms Kamps often dressed in a more masculine manner. According to Ms Kamps, she was fired after complaining about comments made by male and female superiors inside the firm. In the suit, Kamps alleges that one partner in the firm chanted vulgarities while another said that he regretted not sleeping with her. According to her suit, she was targeted for harassment after she refused to inflate a bad report on a minority employee that the firm wanted to get rid of.
Kamps went to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in New York and asked for them to look into it. Once a settlement could not be reached, they issued her a right to sue order. Ms Kamps was actually fired during the mediation session in January that was suppose to be resolving this matter. After she took the matter to the EEOC, anonymous comments began to appear online regarding her. One comment left about her read “subjected us repeatedly to looking at her hideous face.” Another complained about the supposed dollar amount of food she consumed while at functions paid for by the law firm. Ms Kamps also stated “I have been mistreated by Fried, Frank and hope to shine a light on the differences between the firm’s official policies and what the partners actually do.”
The law firm claims that there is no substance to this lawsuit and that it will be readily dismissed. In addition to the money, Ms Kamps is looking to be reinstated to her old job.
