Senator Gillibrand Benefits From Mayor Giuliani’s Bow Out of Politics

Kirsten_Gillibrand,_official_photo_portrait,_111th_CongressIt is finally looking as if Kirsten Gillibrand is in the clear for her first run for Senate. Ever since Rudy Giuliani crashed like Eddie “the Eagle” in his his Presidential bid, speculation has swirled around his potential run for the Presidency, the Senate, the Governorship of New York, but the truth is that he would have failed in all of those. In truth, Giuliani’s style may have turned New York City around, but it also angered more than a few New Yorkers in the process. His rather messy public divorce after his second wife found him cheating on her with his now third wife turned many New Yorkers off of supporting him, and while it is possible that he could have beaten Gillibrand for the Senate, it appears unlikely. While Gilibrand is not overly popular in Upstate, she is not well known towards the City. A campaign would have given the people in the City far more of a chance to get to know her, and in the end, she would have beaten Giuliani.

Instead of running for Governor or Senator, Giuliani appears poised to go out there and be a private citizen. He will likely try to mold an image of himself as the hero of 9/11 despite the fact that he was never really that much of a hero. He is responsible for placing the emergency command center of the city inside a building complex which had already been the target of a terrorist attack in 1993.

Had Giuliani run for office again, scandals from his messy divorce to his attempt to get corrupt cop Bernie Kerik to the top post at Homeland Security.

He has endorsed Rick Lazio for Governor. Of course, should Attorney General Andrew Cuomo run for the Governorship, it is likely that even the endorsement of Giuliani would not allow Lazio to win.

Kirsten Gillibrand has been a staunch ally of the LGBT Community with her push to put an end to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell among other anti-LGBT policies. There are no serious contenders now to block her path to a true Senate victory.
