Jerry Sanders: 1st Republican in office to support repeal of Prop 8

As I reported here, and Glaad later reported here, many prominent conservative and Republican voices seem to be making their support for marriage equality known.

On Tuesday, San Diego’s Republican mayor, Jerry Sanders, choked up on the stand and said,

“My [lesbian] daughter deserves the same opportunity to have a wedding in front of family, friends and co-workers”

Mayor Sanders’ change of heart means he joins a growing conservative school of thought that is fiscally conservative and believes in minimal government interference  and doesn’t fret too much about social conservatism or turning America into a theocracy.

Unfortunately with the growing influence of the various Tea Party movements, a Republican supporting marriage equality can expect to see diminished support at the polls, and even faces the possibility of being ousted in favour of a Tea Party candidate who will pander to the irrational shrieking voices of the pro-theocracy, Sarah Palin worshipping movement.

Extremism is a slipperly slope. While the passion behind extreme views atracts people who feel that their voices have been ignored long enough, extremism is untenable long term, and will eventually burn itself out in a blaze of contradictions and schism.

Non-extremists are plainly starting to give up hope of integrating into this movement. Our rights may be the better for it.
