Thanks for your response Lauren. Yes I get your point and you are right. Yest its not only for fence sitters because many people in our own community who are not directly impacted by specific issues show no interest in coming out in support of these issues. Its always a core group that does the work. We need more of our own to come out to protest, donate, volunteer, write comments. I do however get a sense that there is a little bit of power up going on.

Loveeveryone – with such a nice name – it seems odd to call Lauren the B word, however well disguised. That said my sense is you may be misinterpreting Lauren. It seems to me that she is merely noting what the counter argument COULD be. I do not read into it that she is agreeing with taht point. She says ” Dont expect the oppositionto have a heart.” denotes that she has an opposite view to the stated counter argument. So I think you have completely misread her. Hi Lauren thanks for the comment. Well we cannot cater to our enemies. But we must cater to our potential friends. So many people have no idea about the extent and pervasiveness of discrimination against LGBT families in this Country; Immigration, Taxes, Social Security, employment military and more. The most powerfull weapon we have are our stories and the more they are told, the more opportunity for a tacit community conscience that will certainly transform the next generation.

That said my daughter was adopted from an orphange in Vietnam as a baby. Having children has a set of diverse circumstances. I do not think that the counter argument would work in HC’s instance – because in essence she has much more of life’s opportunities here with me. That said, the counter argument does not dissolve the factual existence and the fact that these are children. The counter argument also ascribes to the idea that LGBT people cannot be good parents. There is NO counter argument. Not one that has any merit anyway….. Thanks for your opinion and please feel free to continue the discussion, melanie.

Unfortunately, the easy counter-argument is that if you had never subjected your daughter to an “artificial family” in the first place, she wouldn’t be confused and distressed by others upholding “traditional” values. Don’t expect the opposition to have a heart.
