Ellen DeGeneres made her first appearance on American Idol as a judge tonight. There has been a lot of rumors about the tension on the set between Cowell and DeGeneres. But it’s hard to imagine DeGeneres being mad at anyone, much less Cowell, whose mean act is mostly shtick after 8 or 9 seasons or Idol. Or is it ten seasons?

Ellen looks great. She has really looked better than ever since she has gotten with Portia. So when she is officially introduced as a judge, she kisses Ryan Seacreast on the mouth; which is awkward and weird and really the most interesting part of the night. Except for when Ellen whips out her cute glasses.

“You frighten me” Is Ellen’s first mean comment. It’s to a hopeful named Skiiboski, who isn’t that great. She warns Skiiboski not to get too intense with his audience, “There’s a fine line.” She is really taking her knowledge of performing and applying it to Idol. Which is an exciting new angle for a judge. I think, I haven’t watched the show before. But I really like it! Skiiboski is eliminated. Guess Ellen nailed that one.  Idol also gave her an opportunity to showcase her humor by letting her play around with the contestants who all made it to the next round.

She tells another contestant to be herself; which is a pretty vague comment. Most of her comments ended up being very vague.

“I think she’s going to get annoying”

“You were just kind of all over the place. It just didn’t work that well.”

“I’m sorry I just was not a fan.”

“Wow your voice is amazing”

So basically, Ellen is pretty even keeled as a judge. I’m still excited to see the progression of her career as a judge. I’m sure as we get further into the season, she will evolve and will provide more unique feedback and commentary.
