Queer Rising, a non-violent New York City LGBT civil disobedience group, says it is planning a protest outside the New York City
Marriage Bureau office on Friday morning from 8-10am. According to a press statement, the group is calling for a “MASSIVE, unprecedented public protest and political action that will take place at the Manhattan Marriage License Bureau located at 141 Worth Street (@ Centre Street), beginning at 8:00am.”
The group says their protest will include two separate actions at the same time. Outside, there will be a rally for all those who support marriage equality, while inside, same-sex couples who want to get married will attempt apply for a marriage license.
“A gathering of same-sex marriage equality proponents for a press conference and rally in the park opposite the bureau; the application – and subsequent rejection – of several same-sex couples hoping to obtain a marriage license inside of the bureau; the application – asubsequent approval – of a lesbian and gay man, whom according to New York State law may legally marry each other, for a marriage license; and a significant act of civil disobedience to rival the lunch-counter sit-ins of the 1960s, in which black Americans asserted their rights of equal treatment by society at large,” said the statement for the group.
This protest follows another action by the group last week, when Queer Rising took its message to various places in NYC on Martin Luther King Day.
