Gillibrand, a petit blonde with a soft voice, clearly states “Now is the time to act” in regard to Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. There is growing disillusionment with the Democratic Party; they haven’t stood up and fought for the causes their base believes in, they have been passive when faced with attacks from the Republican party. However, Gillibrand is willing to stand up and advocate for what she believes is right.
Gillibrand tells Rachel Maddow, that Congress can repeal DADT; that Congress has the power to act independently [of the President] to repeal the act. She does think that the military can and should decide how to best implement the repeal, but congress can repeal it and should repeal is now. Gillibrand points out that Britain has already done something similar and it was successful. Gillibrand calls DADT a corrosive policy and attacks it for preventing our military from being in as complete a state of readiness as possible.
“DADT undermines the trust and integrity of our Armed Services. We have two wars and need to make sure that we have the best people serving”
Gillibrand points out that we have lost 10% of our translators and people in mission critical areas, who cannot be easily replaced.
Gillibrand has even launched a website to help people understand why DADT should be repealed. Gillibrand reveals that she woke up to the pain caused by DADT when she heard the story of Lt. Dan Choy, whom she calls an American hero, who came to speak with her. The more stories we can bring into public discourse, the more people will understand the heartache caused by it. She believes she would be able to garner enough votes to pass legislation. You can visit her website and read the stories of our American Soldiers’ at the link:
