Ellen Degeneres fans are calling on Ellen to pull an Oprah. If you have been reading LGR lately, you have followed our coverage of the teenage lesbian, Constance McMillen, in Mississippi that is being grossly descriminated against by her school district. She was told that not only was she not allowed to bring a female date to the prom, but that she wouldn’t be able to wear a tux to the event either.

McMillen has already tried to enlist the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, who issued a beautifully writtern statement on her behalf, but to no avail. The Itawamba County School District canceled the prom, rather than let McMillen attend. They released this statement:

“It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors”. “However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.”

The LGBT community has been tweeting and facebook this story all over the internet to try to bring attention to McMillen’s plight. We know what this statement means, The Itawamba School District is trying to villify McMillen to all her classmates, students that might have been indifferent or even supportive of her sexual orientation before, will now blame her for the prom being cancelled. We also know that an “unofficial” prom will be organized and McMillen will not be invited. It is probable that McMillen is not the only LGBT student at the school, so the school district is effectively endorsing a “no gays allowed” prom.

Ellen Degeneres Fans see this as an oportunity to step up and do for the LGBT community what Oprah has done in the African American community. Ellen is an out and proud lesbian who has managed to bring the LGBT community and Straight community together. Fans, who do not want to see the 18 year old McMillen go down as a scapegoat for all anti-lgbt rights groups in Mississippi, have been leaving comments on Ellen’s Facebook Wall calling on the influential comedian to help organize a prom that would include the LGBT community in the Itawamba county school district.

Hey fans of Ellen, there’s a school in mississippi that has cancelled prom altogether rather than let a young lesbian student bring her girlfriend to the dance, I say let’s all ask Ellen to organize a prom in that town where students can bring whomever they want as their date! We need to send a message loud and clear t……hat if they target our kids with their hate, we’re gonna shower them with love, and Ellen’s the perfect messenger! Here’s the link to the story:http://lezgetreal.com/?p=28127 and here’s a link to the email at the Ellen Degenerous Show:http://ellen.warnerbros.com/show/respond/?PlugID=10

We are very proud of our readers and Ellen fans for getting the word out. No teenager should have to suffer the kind of alienation that McMillen will have to go through if there is no alternate prom. Please email Ellen at her show or message her on her facebook page to increase her awareness of this situation and get a LGBT friendly prom to Mississippi!
