Gerry Adams to attend straight-only parade after night in men-only club

03/14/2010 by JR Russell

The Sinn Féin president visited a club that bans women in Boston last night and is due to take part in a pre St Patrick’s Day parade which does not allow gay participants in the Massachusetts city later.

From the Sinn Féin website

Sinn Féin advocates the right to social, economic, gender and cultural equality. This encompasses equality for all, irrespective of race, age, marital or family status, sexual orientation, physical or mental capacities, ethnicity, social origin, political or religious affiliations, or membership of the Travelling Community.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual people suffer from discrimination and harassment in every aspect of their daily lives. Whether in the social, political, economic or cultural spheres, they are denied equality of rights and opportunities. There is no logical or rational defence for such exclusion. Only ignorance and indifference enable such a denial of basic fundamental rights to continue.

Gerry Adams‘ actions seem a bit out of step with his party’s apparent equality stance at home.

Is it a case of what happens in Boston, stays in Boston? Are sexism and homophobia ok when you’re not at home? Do we believe that Americans should be held to lower standards than the Irish?

What is it Gerry?

“I know about exclusion, we made our position very, very clear on that,” he said.

“We believe in equality, all groups should be free to be involved in any assembly, particularly one which is celebrating Ireland and which is about a celebration of the Irish.”
