Lt. Choi Arrested After Handcuffing Himself To White House Fence

03/18/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Lt. Dan Choi, whose discharge under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, likely ended his career today by handcuffing himself to the fence surrounding the White House. While his case is under review and appeal, the actions he took today in front of several cameras and television crews likely means that he will be discharged from the military in far less of an honorable situation. He was joined in his protest by Capt. Pietrangelo in his protest. Lt. Choi, Capt. Pietrangelo and Robin McGeechee were all arrested. Capt. Pietrangelo has already been discharged from the military. Lt. Choi may end up being discharged from the military for breaking the law instead of for being openly gay.

Several of Lt. Choi’s friends tried to get him to abandon his protest, which they saw as damaging the cause of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. The controversy surrounding both his actions and the words of Kathy Griffin are being seen as damaging the potential passage of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act which is before the House and Senate right now. Critics of the bill point to actions not dissimilar to those of Lt. Choi as grounds to oppose repeal.

Lt. Choi has stated that he did not give Bravo, which is following Kathy Griffin, a heads up about what he was planning on doing, and it is unclear if the Human Rights Campaign were also informed of this. However, anyone who read LGR earlier today knew of the probability of this occurring.

Damaging to the potential passage of DADT??? Oh come on! The only thing that will damage those chance are the Democrats themselves, Congratulations to these brave and passionate people who just want their equal rights. HRC, are you listening??

Actually, Magnolia, a lot of us do believe that these kinds of stunts are damaging to the passage of DADT. There is a time and place for such actions, but that time and that place are neither now, nor here. Instead, what it makes Choi look like is a fool. Right now, opponents of DADT repeal are looking for any reason to deny us our rights. Acting juvenile and handcuffing yourself to the White House fence is just what they are looking for. It is the kind of stunt that makes the waverers vote against you, and gives ammunition to the opposition. Had this bill failed, and had this gone on for another two years- THEN what Choi did would have been brave and necessary. What he did was come as close as he could to sabotaging the repeal process. What he also did is more than likely make sure that he will be discharged dishonorably and without a chance to get back in.

I think that Lt. Choi is awesome. He’s smart and articulate and I don’t think what he did hurt “the cause.” We’ve been nice and played by the rules for years and it’s gotten us nowhere. Someone had to take a stand. The LGBT community will fight as hard as everyone else, we’re not pushovers and we won’t go away.
