Being Catholic does not mean that one is anti-LGBT. Dignity USA, a Progressive Catholic group which supports the LGBT Community, along with Call to Action and LGBT Catholic groups New Ways Ministry and Fortunate Families has taken out a full page ad in both of the Sunday Denver Post and Boulder Daily Camera taking the Colorado diocese for expelling two children from a Catholic private school because their parents are lesbian.
“It’s hurtful to see the Catholic Church rejecting gay people. But rejecting children because their parents are gay? That hurt can last a lifetime.”
“As Catholics, it is deeply hurtful to see the Archdiocese of Denver forcibly remove children from their educational programs to send a message of rejection and exclusion to those children’s parents. Lesbian and gay people are part of our families and part of the church. To see their children hurt in this way fills our hearts with grief, and it tears at the very fabric of the community.”
The ad concludes with “Because We Are All The Children Of God.”
Many Catholics have been appalled at the expulsion of these children. Even Bill O’Reilly went after the Catholic Church for this noting that the children of people who have remarried outside of the Church, and who have committed adultery have been allowed to attend Catholic schools.
In the North East, the Catholic Church is shuttering schools left and right. Schools that have served the Catholic community for more than a hundred years are finding attendance so low now that they cannot remain open, and yet, the Catholic Church can afford to kick students out of the system because their parents are not meeting their exacting moral standards.
Marianne Duddy-Burke, DignityUSA Executive Director, stated that “The Archdiocese of Denver has the legal right to expel these young children, but that doesn’t mean that it’s the right thing to do. We grieve at seeing these children hurt in this way, and we hope that the Archdiocese will listen to the voices of those who express their concerns about how these children are being treated.”
However, Archbishop Charles Chaput is remaining firm in his stance on this issue.
