Rep. Stupak- No Agreement On Executive Order On Abortion, He Is A “No” Vote
03/21/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Moments ago, Representative Bart Stupak made it clear that there is no deal regarding abortion language in an executive order, and that his vote is still no. “Right now there is no agreement and right now I am a No vote,” Stupak stated. Representative Stupak has been vehemently anti-choice during the whole healthcare reform process. While an amendment he crafted at the behest of Catholic Bishops did pass the House of Representatives, it failed in the Senate.
The amendment has even been something of a sticking point with Catholic groups pitting nuns against bishops. Many Catholic nuns have called upon the Congress to pass the healthcare bill without worrying about the abortion language. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops dug in its heels and stated that it, and only it, had the right to speak regarding policy. Indeed, Stupak rejected a letter representing some 60,000 nuns by stating “When I’m drafting right to life language, I don’t call up the nuns.” Instead, he confers with “leading bishops, Focus on the Family, and The National Right to Life Committee.”
An executive order was thought to be enough to bypass the need for the House to try and pass an anti-choice amendment to the bill since the House must pass the Senate bill exactly as it is. This executive order would have put into place Stupak’s amendment via the executive branch and gotten him to vote in favor of the bill. Instead, that appears to have failed.
Update- Stupak and company to vote yes- http://lezgetreal.com/?p=29036

As Stupak said, and executive order is not enforceable and can be rescinded. Obama is known for his double-talk and deception.
If Stupak accepts an Executive Order, he is phony and a disgrace. I cannot believe what a hypocrite that will make him.
Scoundrel. Stupak is a scoundrel.
this isn’t true. he is a yes vote.
Sevens,
This WAS true as of the moment of release. It is no longer true because this has now changed. Please see update http://lezgetreal.com/?p=29036
Stupak is an idiot and a coward No guts at all. And a fool.
Stupak is an idiot and a coward No guts at all.
“Sure, Bart, I’ll just sign an Executive Order. You can trust me.”
Obama has not lived up to anything promised so far. There was supose to be no close meeting for this “transparent” administration. Any congress person you votes for this bill is wrong. This is not the American way – the majority of Americans are against this health care bill – the freedom live.
And the majority of the people who are opposed to this bill are opposed on the grounds that it does not go far enough not because it goes too far.
“Not far enough”?? You mean not enough pork or not enough about other issues like education, or just not enough new powers for the IRS?
Congress promises to come back and change things after the bill is law and Bart is counting on them leaving this in place? I wonder what HE got offered to change. I’m supporting whoever runs against him.
1. ” Many Catholic nuns have called upon the Congress to pass the healthcare bill without worrying about the abortion language.”
NO. What they said was that the Health Care Bill was consistent with existing law and did NOT leave any loopholes for government-funded abortion. Their letter is online.
2. “The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops dug in its heels and stated that it, and only it, had the right to speak regarding policy.”
The nuns were NOT speaking to policy… they merely issued an opinion that the Health Care Bill was consistent with existing law, and President Obama agreed.
What the Executive Order does is reaffirm the opinion of the Catholic nuns, who also oppose abortion. The Executive Order also reaffirms the Hyde Amendment, which constitutes existing law.
Your bias is blatantly evident. Language is important. No wonder the abortion issue is so widely misunderstood.
Stupak is practicing his religion on behalf of the U.S. Conference of BIshops exerting undue religious influence on Congress, seeking to hijack Constitutional law, and both the Catholic Church and Stupak are in violation of the Separation of Powers Act.
No
Actually, Ms Voeltz, my bias is not evident. You have certainly not understood what I stated. I am sorry for the confusion. Perhaps I should be clearer- the nuns said not to worry about having to include ANY abortion language. We have no liking for Rep. Stupak or the Bishops he takes orders from. However, since this was not the central theme of this particular article, I had to do what I could as quickly as I could to get this story out.
NO ONE, except the propaganda coming from Conservatives, has referred to this bill as “universalized healthcare”.
Polling and debate do not change the written word.
Congressman Stupak, I attempted to email the following comment on your website, but was not allowed access so I hope you see it here: I can not believe what you have just done to your constituents, our country, our constitution, and the unborn babies.
You sold out, Rep. Stupak. How low can one man stoop?? You gained $700,000 for 3 new airports, but you lost much much more. The respect of the American people. Hope you sleep good at night. NOT!!
No, that this is not universalized healthcare. Please keep up with the polling and the actual debate.
Stupak is nothing more than a democrat shill, willing to vote for anything that he can personally get uncovered kickback. May he quickly suffer the greatest of natures plaques.
