Congratulations Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, new chair of LGBT Caucus .

Equality California has ’s extend a warm welcome to Tom Ammiano, who was elected to serve as Chair of the state legislature’s LGBT Caucus. He takes over for Sen. Mark Leno and has served as a member of the LGBT Caucus since his election to the State Assembly in 2008. EQCA works avowedly in the California State Legislature to bring ground breaking legislation, much of which serves as an example to the entire Nation.

EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors welcomed the election:

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Assembly member Ammiano on his election to lead the LGBT Caucus. Assembly member Ammiano is a dedicated, courageous leader who has championed several pieces of landmark legislation on behalf of the LGBT community. Equality California looks forward to working to achieve full equality for LGBT Californians in partnership with Assembly member Ammiano.”

Earlier this year, Assembly member Ammiano introduced the LGBT Prisoner Safety Act, sponsored by Equality California, to prevent abuse of LGBT inmates. During his tenure in the California Assembly, he has been a staunch advocate to expand protections and rights for the LGBT community.

Last year I personally gave testimony in the CA Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of  a resolution, AJ15,  supporting UAFA. It  passed the California  assembly and my hope is that there will be a push to have the State Senate hearing as soon as feasible.
