On another note, thirty-one states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons and while it should be noted that the City and County of San Francisco essentially have a No-Issue policy on California Concealed Weapons License’s currently and California is only one of six states that has no mention at all of the keeping or bearing of arms in their state constitutions, under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution it is the right of every law abiding American Citizen to do so.
In California however, you are required to obtain a Handgun Safety Certificate if you wish to purchase a pistol and a California Concealed Weapons License if you wish to carry a handgun for your personal protection in the Golden State.
Contact your county’s Sheriff’s Office or, if you are a resident of an incorporated city, your city’s Police Department, for information on obtaining a CCW license. They can answer your questions and provide you with copies of their CCW policy statement and the State’s Standardized CCW Application. If you live within a jurisdiction of a city Police Department, you may apply to the county Sheriff’s Office for a CCW license. However, only residents of a city may apply to a city’s Police Department for a CCW license.
