While the usual plague of faith blinded idiots are busy blithering their way towards mind numbed frothiness over the first step in repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Lieutenant Dan Choi and Captain James Pietrangelo have decided to express their solidarity for those who do not want to see the law initial steps in being torn down from starting. The two men are going on hunger strike until President Barack Obama does something unconstitutional and inserts non-discrimination language into the Defense Budget and orders a suspension of all discharges under DADT.
While the third thing that they want could come down from President Obama- the termination of the study into how to implement repeal of DADT- it is unlikely that President Obama would do that because it would mean not repealing DADT as soon as the study is over. The repeal of DADT is contingent upon the study being finished and without it, that law remains in place.
President Obama could order a moratorium of discharges under DADT, but that would be legally complicated without backing from Congress and a clear and definitive end to the law in place. Since the repeal is contingent on the completion of the study and the study’s findings, that seems rather impossible. Of course, many people have been discharged only to be told that they will be let back in if they want after the law is repealed.
Unless you have the hearts and minds of the people who you claim to represent, hunger strikes are not very effective. Given that the majority of the LGBT Community are cautiously celebrating the victory last night, it seems unlikely that Choi and Pietrangelo will be able to garner much support. Indeed, they may find that most people are not going to back them as the majority of us are already turning our eyes on the Pentagon and the White House for the final push to get this law repealed as soon as 31 December.
We are often told that President Obama is the messiah by his detractors. Certainly they believe that he can part the waters in the Gulf and stop the oil spill with his bare hands…wait…wrong guy…oh yes, perhaps they believe he can walk across the waters and sop up all the oil that is floating on the surface. Perhaps, Obama can turn the Earth and time back in order to prevent the explosion which caused this mess in the first place. The reality is that Obama cannot do anything which goes against the laws. He has no magic wand which will let him do what ever he wants.
There is a risk of looking like one is throwing a temper tantrum over getting vanilla ice cream instead of mint because the store is out of mint. There is a risk of looking petulant and petty in the face of victory. There is even the risk of losing that victory in order to bet on a bigger victory down the line which may not occur for years.
Lt. Choi and Capt. Pietrangelo appear to now be ready to starve themselves to death over a law which, if we keep the pressure on the Pentagon and the White House for the next seven months, will be history by the time that dawn breaks on the new year.
Hunger strikes rarely work, and often do not last to the point of death.
Of course, the problem may be that GetEqual is running out of funds and both men just cannot afford groceries right now.

Getequal? Dan Choi doesn’t work for them he works for the Army and he has fought for all ya all rights like or not. Girl, give me a brake are you out there trying to take a stand? Nope, y’all are trash talking on your computers. Get it straight before you think you have something to say. Gossip always gossip – when are we all going to ever get something real said and done.

DramaQueenNYC,
Please read up on Lt. Choi- he does not work for the Army. He is a member of the New York State Army National Guard. That means that he is a part time soldier not a full time soldier. He gets paid a very small amount of money via the Army NG. This is not gossip. These are cold, hard facts that you seem to be less than thrilled about having to hear.
Lt. Choi is now a member of GetEQUAL. It is all over the place.
i am a writer, journalist, and whether you like it or not, I am taking a stand. I may not be acting stupid and handcuffing myself to a fence or going on hunger strike, but I am read quite well by those in office.

GetEQUAL has NOTHING to do with what Dan Choi chooses to do with his life. The correlation is absurd. What next HRC is making him? or wait SLDN? or wait Equality Federation? give me a break. I am tired of all the inner bashing. Who cares? Those that complain the most are typically the ones who do the least in this case is falls on the writer and some readers. The man served our country and is fighting for all you on here give me a break. No one has all the answers.

DramaQueenNYC-
Actually, Lt. Choi is a member of GetEQUAL now. He has been since before he handcuffed himself to the White House fence along with a bunch of other members of GetEQUAL. You may want to read up on the information that is out there before you decide to bash me and what I said. I have followed this closely. I am also familiar with what this man has done to our image inside the Pentagon.
Incidentally, I am critical of him. If I was bashing him, I would be saying a lot of very nasty things about him.
I just want to know why it took so long for everyone who supports Choi to realize this was here. I wrote this, what, Friday morning?

By my estimation GetEqual has been funded to the tune of $1.250,000 over the last 10 months by 2 rich white affluent gay men. They are not a lobbying organization but a few upstarts without a reliable mission other than shouting at those on out side. They lack the spine and courage to go after those truly against us. For example how about they stage a sit-in at National Organization for Marriage, or American Family Association, or Focus on the Family, or Family Research Council? Until they show “balls” and take on those against our rights then they are not more than a passing moment of noise.

I think all of this is rather funny.
Wendy Leigh, et al. I somehow doubt that you all have been fans of this site or you would already know that we are highly critical of Lt. Choi and GetEQUAL. I suspect that you are all here because you are terrified that we’re going to cut into your profits. You know we do not get along with them or with the HRC.
Here is the thing. I have not insulted you. I have not called Choi any names. I have called his behavior infantile, but not insulted him directly. I have not implied anything about you in a transphobic manner, which incidentally, you just tried to do with me. Thing is, Wendy Leigh, et al., you have all been at this for a long time now and look at just how far we’ve gotten. The definition of insanity is to continually do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.
I bet that if we follow your tactics, I’ll be an old woman long before we get our rights.
If you were around then, then you know that what you are doing won’t work. Why be upset if we try something different? Or does that frighten you?

Go ahead Bridgette. Greasing wheels and the pay-to-play you suggest is how we have stagnated. But go ahead, bribe away. I haven’t heard any suggestions, only attacks. “Light of victory”??? More like you’ve been lighting up too many “special” cigarettes. Not that he would have, but “unconstitutional” for Obama to put repeal language in his DEFAUTH requests? Balderdash! If he hand and if it were, Congress would simply have ignored it. What some members of Congress have NOT ignored….unlike Miss Paula and all the Obambots….is “10 United States Code 12305″ – “Authority of the President to Suspend Certain Laws Relating to Promotion, Retirement, and Separation” passed by Congress in 1983 to give ANY President power to ignore ANY other law….including, now, DADT….in the name of national security. It reads: “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, during any period members of a reserve component are serving on active duty pursuant to an order to active duty under authority of section 12301, 12302, or 12304 of this title,[uh, that would be NOW] the President may suspend ANY provision of law relating to promotion,
retirement, or SEPARATION applicable to ANY member of the armed forces who the President determines is essential to the national security of the United States.” And guess who has publicly declared that gay discharges “weaken national security”? Wait for it….drum roll….Barack Obama A YEAR AGO when he also said there was “an URGENCY” to ending those discharges…..but he didn’t, even tho he has this power to do it unilaterally THAT CONGRESS GAVE HIM but has refused despite both of those ruthless throwers of unconstitutional Molotov cocktails Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid AND Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. And THIS is the man we’re supposed to trust going forward? “Fools rush in…..” Contrary to Miss Paula, let’s see what real frontline heroes in the battle to end the ban have said about Dan: “He’s an American hero. He has every right to speak out and to make our country a better place.” – Cong. Patrick Murphy. …”There is room for all types of actions in this movement. And I think that, done strategically and in coordination with broader coalitions working on these issues, there is room for actions similar to what Dan and Captain Pietrangelo chose to do on the White House gates.” – Servicemember United’s/HRC’s Jarrod Chlapowski, EVEN THO he disagreed about doing it “in uniform” as did former Sixth Army Sargeant of the Year Jose Zuniga who outed himself in 1993 during the fight to lift the ban, and currently on the Board of Directors of SLDN: ““I respect Dan Choi’s passion and, although I wish he had not engaged in civil disobedience while dressed in an Army uniform, I personally understand, as someone who was discharged from the U.S. Army … because I am a gay man, the frustration he and our community rightly feel.”
Bottomline: While others who disagree with some of Dan’s choices WITH RESPECT, puerile Paula has a thorny hair up her ass about Dan Choi the way some others do about Obama. NOTHING anyone could say is going to change what passes for her mind. But for other readers: putting the brat in “military brat,” like every good little Pavlovian puppy she’s been trained to fetch and retch whenever she’s told someone has “disgraced his uniform ” [even tho, at the same time, she dismisses his current service as "only" in the reserves - some 800,000 other reservists might want to speak to her about that]. Gee, I thought the military was sworn to defend the Constitution and that includes defending the right of free actual and symbolic speech. Members of the military should be no barred than any citizen from the right to participate in civil disobedience. I mean it’s not like the broke the law and then fled to Canada to avoid punishment. Her serial killer-like attacks on Dan include demonizing him for any money he might make …. like tens of thousands of other advocates for whatever…speaking about ending the ban while if he was paid a gazillion dollars for preaching HER “party line” she’d being clapping like a seal. Hypocrisy much?

Correction: should read:
….despite….Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid AND Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi urging Obama to use his legal powers to stop discharges given he CLAIMS that’s what he wants AND the history of “stop loss” of gays going all the way back to WWII when the military has need, as Obama’s said, “all hands on deck.”

Wendy, Albert and I totally associate ourselves with your remarks. To say anymore, would invite more heat than light. You have not any idea who you insult. Raymond is a veteran, very wise and knows more than you ever will. Dan Choi is a veteran fighting for his career and our rights, in a way that was successful back in the day when we actually got shit done. It can be found in your books, some of which I’ve posted. Lezgetreal really hits the toilet with a big splash with this divide and conquer lazy shit. Ya’ll just lost me as a fan. REALLY disappointed. As long as there is one queer that settles for half- measures, it completely undermines our chances of getting full equality.
There has been alot of weight onto that agreement Obama made to the Pentagon however you forget that he made a promise to the gay community first and then broke it by promising alternate terms with the Pentagon. Do no just pass that over to attempt to validate your criticism of GetEQUAL. They are the ones who even got Congress to vote on this thing at all. If left to TRUST the President, it would not have been.
The critics here are glossing over KEY clues to what may happen here, like Obamas rhetoric changes from repeal to “rollback”….Consider the fact that the reason Gates doesn’t want it repealed fully is he only wants to “make it more humane” as in a BAN-LITE???? A full repeal would make it harder for them to end with a ban-lite equivalent. This is no more than a divide and conquer GetEQUAL tactic by the WH, and they deserve much better than I see here.
Wake up apologists!

Wendy Leigh,
While i am sorry to see a fan go, I would like to make a few things crystal clear. GetEQUAL’s tactics are not going to work. Apparently you have not been listening to me. Until and unless the whole LGBT Community is up in arms and willing to march, nothing will happen via GetEQUAL’s little stunts. They are worthless. They are like the buzzing of flies.
The other thing that you are not listening to at all is that President Obama only has so much power, doesn’t he?
Of course, GetEQUAL has not really been doing much of anything except stunts. They might feel nice, but they do not turn politicians to our cause.
While it seems glorious, all those marches by the Civil Rights supporters in the 1960′s would have gotten nowhere fast without lobbyists in Washington pressing the flesh and greasing the wheels of power. GetEQUAL has no intention or understanding of that.
I am sorry that you do not grasp that your little temper tantrums are not going to solve anything, but I speak out of a rather strong understanding of the way the system works, as does Dr. Brooks.

Funny, your disgusting “article” just seems like the temper tantrum, a high school spite who turns on her own people to write a terrible “story”. You are a sorry ass traitor Bridggette, that’s the ONLY thing you make crystal clear and I hardly doubt you were around in 1967 to speak to the success of the Civil Rights era. It certainly was NOT due to MLK’s “lobbyist’s” inside the halls of Congress “greasing the wheels of power”. LMQAO!!!

Wendy Leigh,
I have studied. You know, the thing with the books. You know, actually reading the stuff written by the people who lived through it. You know, talked to the people who were there. I am an historian, Wendy. I know what did and did not work because I studied. Those marches would have been for nothing without someone like…oh Lyndon Banes Johnson in power pushing his fellow politicians for what was eventually won.
You remember Johnson, right? The man who became President when Kennedy was assassinated? The man who pushed through the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The man who was good friends with MLK? The man who MLK had a falling out with over Vietnam? That President Johnson? Ring a bell?
Wendy, you are the one throwing a temper tantrum, not me. Lt. Choi is the one throwing a temper tantrum, not me. I am very cognizant of what is left to be done. We have taken one tiny step forward. What Lt. Choi wants us to do is take a giant leap backwards.
You are just upset because you are afraid that what I said is the truth. Once you admit your fear, you can face it.
Oh yes, one last little thing, Wendy.
So far, I have been called a lot of things, including an “illiterate cunt rag”, being called a traitor is hardly worth noticing. On the other hand, I am smiling. I really am. Thank you for playing.

Oh what drivel. Melanie needs to reconsider her contributors. What lazy swill. I was around in the 60′s, and one of the original members of HRC at that. They got rich and so “special” that it got us a compromise from their buddy at CAP. How rich. Your book reading has nothing on the truth for any of us who were actually around like David Mixner, Cleve Jones and Act Up who brought light to the AIDS epidemic. Robin McGeee was one of the organizers of the National Equality March and I dare say HARDLY a failure. Again, school girls having a tantrum. Wake the fuck up before you completely kill this blog completely. Lezgetreal owes a public apology.

It was signed in ’64 but wasn’t actualized (kind of like what you are doing now) Bloody Sunday happened, Selma, voting rights and Loving all happened after. Lyndon Johnson even had to direct the Federal Gov’t to honor the Civil Rights Act . Asserting that civil rights laws alone are not enough to remedy discrimination, President Johnson issues Executive Order 11246, which enforces affirmative action for the first time. It requires government contractors to “take affirmative action” toward prospective minority employees in all aspects of hiring and employment.
April 19, 1967
Stokely Carmichael, a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), coins the phrase “black power” in a speech in Seattle. He defines it as an assertion of black pride and “the coming together of black people to fight for their liberation by any means necessary.” The term’s radicalism alarms many who believe the civil rights movement’s effectiveness and moral authority crucially depend on nonviolent civil disobedience.
June 12
In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court rules that prohibiting interracial marriage is unconstitutional. Sixteen states that still banned interracial marriage at the time are forced to revise their laws.
July
Major race riots still take place in Newark (July 12–16) and Detroit (July 23–30).
April 4, 1968
(Memphis, Tenn.) Martin Luther King, at age 39, is shot as he stands on the balcony outside his hotel room. Escaped convict and committed racist James Earl Ray is convicted of the crime.
And so it goes.. Accusing Dan Choi of being a traitor is wholeheartedly disingenuous and I stand by the charge of demanding a public apology by Lezgetreal.

Wendy Leigh,
I reached out to you to try and explain my side of this story. You ignored me. Attacking me and Paula is not going to endear you to us and not going to get an apology from anyone associated with this blog. There are reasons why Paula usually takes on the brunt of the criticism here. Maybe if you were a little less angry and a little more open to discussion you would understand why. I have tried to make amends. You are the one who first insulted us, and despite that, I reached out to try and make amends and even explained my thinking behind my criticism of Choi. You have slapped that aside. I have no more words for you.

Missed it, sorry girls. This isn’t even a legitimate blogsite, this is a damn attack zone. I am a Firefighter by profession and pay, attracted by Melanie Nathans posts and fb friend. I do apologize to the broader community and my PACommunity for passing this space as legitimate, but cannot any longer. You ladies are exactly what is wrong with our cannibalistic community. How many of the people posting here are in the military, were discharged from the military or have a love one in or discharged from the military? This is personal for Lt. Choi and Captain Pietrangelo. They are taking a stand for all who are currently in harm’s way of being discharged by this non-repeal co-promise. Along with all the other brave men and women risking their lives for freedom, they should not stand alone but should have the support of us all. Once Don’t Ask Just Kick the Gays Out & Replace them with Felons & Fascists is finally repealed for good, then the door will be kicked opened wide for the rest of our rights, which must be unconditional, including the right to marry, work, and live where we want. How personal are those rights for any of you who are complaining to the choir?

Planetspinz,
My best friend was kicked from the military under DADT. Stripped of her benefits, she has had no real support in the real world. This is personal for ME. Because of DADT, my best friend will die long before I do. I will loose someone who has been there for me through some of the worst my life has had to offer. Guess what, sir, my best friend, in the depression of being kicked out of the military- a life that she loved more than anything- began taking drugs. She got ahold of a dirty needle. She has full blown AIDS.
Just because it is personal for Choi and Pietrangelo does not mean it is not personal for me, for Dr. Brooks, for many of the people who write on this site.

So turning back the clock back to 1993 is considered progress? Read the bill. There is nothing in there to compel the military to allow gays to serve openly in the military. That requires the non-discrimination languiage you so blithely dismissed. As advertised, the bill “repeals” DADT and returns the situation to the pre-1993 status quo, back when the military could still ask about your sexuality and kicked you out regardless of whether you told. Regardless of whether or not this bill passes, it will be a very long time before gays are allowed to serve openly in the military. So what exactly are we supposed to be celebrating?

Ahem…Loki,
Appropriate name, actually, Norse God of Discord. If I remember correctly, it is Loki who was responsible for blinding Odin.
You will notice that I do not say anything about dismissing the need for that language. I simply dismiss the fact that Obama cannot wave a magic wand and suddenly, miraculously insert language into a bill in a totally illegal and unconstitutional manner.
Please stop asking Obama to walk on water, part the seas, turn back time, etc. Let the grown ups deal with this and stop throwing a tantrum because you aren’t being listened to and the more you scream the less you will be listened to.

To AndrewW. I am a doctor, and I agree. He is developing a Narcissitic Personality Disorder. There is no cause for which a hunger strike is useful, except possibly imprisonment. ..and he in NOT imprisoned, In fact, he is probably a bit too free in his expecting others to blindly accept all of his stunts.
I myself am not in anyway backing down from my personal demand of requiring the President
to issue whatever type of Executive Order, Memo or Stop-Loss we need to STOP THE DISCHARGES. I am doing it my way by sending pleasant dircet denial letters of support to any and all causes, candidates or parties who send me requests. I send daily letters to the Whitehouse asking for this to happen. Have for over a year!
DO YOU? Does Lt. Choi? Does everyone at Get Equal? We are the voices for those who cannot ask we must continue to use them, to the best effect we can under our system of law and policy. MONEY talks in the U.S. Hunger does not…. and it certainly will not move a man as stubborn as OBAMA.

I am going to be blunt. A year and a half ago, I went on this site and stated that we needed Obama to issue an executive order to stop the discharges until the law was repealed. This idea you and Lt. Choi, and Captain Pietrangelo and GetEQUAL are busy stomping around with? A year and a half ago, abouts, I put that idea out there on the blogosphere. I want to see that happen. While progress towards repeal is slow, we are making more progress than we have had in 17 years. Seriously? A hunger strike? I applaud their courage but at the end of the path, the most likely result of the hunger strike will probably be that they need new clothes.
On the ‘bright side’ perhaps they won’t have the strength to chain themselves to the White House fence in uniform for a while.
