Rand Paul has two options moving forward. He can either learn to be a good candidate or he can bow out of the race now and see if the GOP can get a do over on the primary. While Dr. Paul’s views are common among many Tea Partiers, they are not within the mainstream and may serve to energize the African-American community in Kentucky, as well as many others, to vote for his Democratic opponent Attorney General Jack Conway. Of course, Conway has a few benefits going his way. While he is a veteran politician, he is not an ‘Beltway Insider’. He knows how to run a campaign where as Dr. Paul seems to have no experience in running a campaign.
Dr. Paul has also run into a few other problems of late. In 2002, he wrote a letter to the editor which expressed the same views he now expresses on the campaign trail. This is bad news for him. That letter is something that he is not going to be able to distance himself from, nor will it make him look like he is just now using these views in order to make himself sound appealing to the Tea Party groups.
Basically, Dr. Rand Paul looks and feels like a racist. He may state he is opposed to discrimination in all forms, but he has never thought through his argument in any manner. This means that he is vulnerable to changing direction at the least provocation and stating ideas which are toxic to a candidate.
Dr. Paul claims to be a libertarian. The reality is that he is not. He opposes same-sex marriage and wants a Constitutional amendment banning abortion of any kind. These are not views held by a true Libertarian. Instead, these are the views of someone who is a political fascist, plain and simple.
His views amount to an attitude of allowing businesses and people to do what ever they want so long as they are not against any Christian theocratic views he holds such as banning marriages between two people of the same sex and allowing women to have control over their own bodies. It likely holds that he is also against birth control. His views may play well with the faux Libertarians like Sarah Palin and the Tea Party crowds who are more far Right Republicans than they are true Libertarians, but they do not work well with the rest of the electorate.
“He thinks he’s got enough working knowledge of the system and his philosophy to hold forth on anything any time, but he’s not ready for prime time,” Alex Cross, a long time Kentucky journalist stated. Indeed, Dr. Paul has no understanding of his own philosophy or why these laws exist in the first place. Instead, his blanket belief that all things LIBERAL are evil has blinded him to the very real issues whereby the government must step in to control certain behaviors in the name of greater social good because businesses and people do not do the right thing. People still drink and drive even though it is wrong. Businesses still sell tainted meat and produce. If people did the right thing, we would not need government.
The problem is, people do not do the right thing.
Dr. Rand Paul went on Good Morning America to defend BP against the “unAmerican” attack on them by President Barack Obama. What Dr. Paul seems to have not learned is that BP is being attacked from every direction for their incompetence and that he needs to really shut up. Dr. Rand Paul is going to join the Chicken Lady in Nevada for the worst slip ups in this campaign season.
While we have several months to go until the election, do not expect that this issue or Dr. Paul’s views will go away. Here are some clips from last night’s MSNBC lineup regarding Dr. Paul’s disastrous interview with Dr. Rachel Maddow.
