In the face of a tough reelection campaign against Tea Party favorite J.D. Hayworth, Senator John McCain has tacked right- hard right. Now he is threatening to support a filibuster of the entire Defense Budget if the compromise Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell amendment is put into that bill. Senator McCain has also demanded that the vote be in open session, a move that will, likely, mean that the Senator will do everything he can to try and let his constituents know that he thinks very little of their views on this subject. Undoubtably, Senator McCain, who once supported repeal of DADT if the military leaders asked for it, will try to parade the recent letters from the military chiefs in order to try and burnish his record with Conservatives- many of whom support the repeal of DADT and oppose cutting off funding for the military.
Senator McCain will, probably, try to distort what this bill does, including the fact that it has a sixty day review cushion, and is contingent upon the Pentagon finishing its study and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the Secretary of Defense and the President signing off.
Senator McCain is not a happy man. Indications are that he is livid over losing the Presidency again, and that this push back form within the Tea Party, which he helped to create in choosing Sarah Palin as his VP candidate, has not helped him any.
A recent advertisement by Senator McCain about finishing the border fence resulted in wide ranging lampooning, including a redo of his ad on the Death Star with the part of Senator McCain being played by Emperor Palpatine.
