New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn is backing the Catholic League’s request for the Empire State Building to honor Mother Teresa on what would have been the nun’s 100th birthday. So far, the Empire State Building has refused to do so. The reasoning is rather straightforward. The Empire State Building does not like to change its lights to honor anyone or any cause that might be related to religion or politics.
Quinn, who is openly lesbian, has often cross swords with the Roman Catholic Church’s anti-LGBT agenda. Speaker Quinn stated that she does not believe that it is a religious action to honor Mother Teresa. “I think it would be a great thing in memory and recognition of Mother Teresa. I am Catholic, but it’s not a religious thing. The reason to do it- to have the Empire State Building blue and white ( the colors of Mother Teresa’s order)- is to remind people of a woman who gave her life in service.”
Bill Donahue, President of the Catholic League, stated regarding this:
“We’re getting support from bishops from India. We’re getting support from people all over the country. I made an application on February 2. In June, I received notice that my application had been rejected. I will turn thousands of Catholics to the street on Thursday, August 26.”
The rationale behind the Empire State Buildings decision is purely based upon the religious significance of Mother Teresa.
