Now that Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, Republican incumbent from Riverside County, CA, is officially the Republican nominee, Mayor Steve Pougnet has reiterated his challenge to Bono Mack to hold a substantive, issue-focused debate with him during the general election campaign. Bono Mack has not held a public debate since 2002.
“Residents of Riverside County deserve to know where the candidates for Congress stand on the issues that affect us all. Today, I call on Congresswoman Bono Mack to join me in a series of debates to be held throughout the district over the coming months,” said Mayor Steve Pougnet. “Last September, I requested that Bono Mack join me to discuss health care and she failed to reply. Although Bono Mack has not debated an opponent of hers since 2002, I hope that this request meets with a different response because the voters ought to have the opportunity to hear from both of us.”
Openly gay Dad, Mayor Pougnet is running for Congress to create good-paying clean energy jobs in Riverside County. Since announcing his intention to run for Congress, Pougnet has raised over $1 million, more than any campaign has raised to challenge Bono Mack. 3rd party conservative candidate Bill Lussenheide will also be on the ballot in November.
Pougnet has already garnered strong national support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), as well as drawn national press attention to what is viewed as one of the most vulnerable districts for Republicans among the 2010 congressional races.
Prior to moving to Palm Springs, and his election as Mayor, Steve Pougnet was Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.
As Vice President he had executive responsibility for the School’s Office of Development, including structuring, planning, budgeting and execution of all programs in fundraising, gift administration, stewardship and records maintenance.
He was also responsible for the School’s Public Affairs Office. From 1991 through 1993, Mr. Pougnet served as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations and Special Assistant to the Vice President at Colorado School of Mines.
Steve is also the former Associate Director for Corporate & Foundation Relations, at Michigan State University and the former Associate Director of National Corporate Leadership Programs at United Way of America. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Michigan State University.
Steve Pougnet lives in Palm Springs with his partner Christopher and their children Beckham and Julia. He enjoys running, biking, swimming, snowboarding and golfing.
The LGBT community is keeping a supportive eye on Steve to help rid congress and the people of incumbent Republican lockstepster Mary Bono Mack, not to mention the fact that the face, such as represented in the Photograph above, of an LGBT family is currently missing in Congress. This would make a refreshing change!
