St. Louis Planned Parenthood To Offer Insemination Services, Evangelicals Upset By It

06/25/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
“They just found out they’re expecting, finally,” says the advertisement over the heads of two women hugging. Planned Parenthood of St. Louis in Missouri is planning to begin offering artificial insemination services fairly soon, and that will include for lesbian couples. Of course, many Christian Evangelicals are busy trying to point out just how horrific and horrible this will be despite a recent study which showed that the children of lesbian couples conceived via artificial insemination are more likely to be well adjusted and well behaved.

LifeSiteNews talked about how controversial the topic of artificial insemination is and how there are some who are worried about it making children into consumer goods despite the fact that our society, including the Evangelicals, do everything that it can to make children just consumers. They got a statement from Wendy Wright, President of the Concerned “Women’s” Alliance, stating “This is disturbing, and consistent with Planned Parenthood’s warped view of sex and children. “Planned Parenthood treats children as products to be eliminated or created for the pleasure of others. They attempt to divorce sex from procreation, and procreation from sex.” Never mind that society is already doing that anyway, including many Evangelicals who have been found in the beds of their various non-spouse lovers over the decades.

Of course, they use as the basis for their concern a study done by the Christian research group Commission on Parenthood’s Future. In a wonderful bit of numerical trickery, of course, LifeSiteNews did the old switcheroo regarding this statement “25% of donor-conceived children strongly agreed that no one really understood them, compared to roughly 1/2 of this percentage of adopted children and roughly a 1/3 of this percentage of those raised by their biological parents.”

To be honest, that should read 1/4 of all donor-conceived children, ½ of all adopted children, and 1/3 of all biologically raised OR 25%, 50% and 33%. That means that fewer donor-conceived children felt that no one understood them, not more. This is a statistical trick to make it look like the number of who did not feel like anyone understood them was higher among donor-conceived children.

Of course, given that LifeSiteNews does not contain a link to any of the actual data, or the study itself, but claims all of these things makes it rather problematic. There does not seem to be any peer reviewed study to back this up, unlike a recent study which showed that children raised by lesbian parents and conceived via donor sperm were more likely to be healthy and happy.

The story of Ry Russo-Young, which was published at The Daily Beast, is well worth perusing and reading. She is the child of a lesbian couple, and she was conceived via a sperm donor.

Reports are that the National Organization for Marriage is also not too happy with this particular service being offered by St. Louis Planned Parenthood.
