Action: If No Barbara Boxer in Senate Then NO LGBT Equality

Melanie Nathan – 7-13-2010

Barbara Boxer for Senate Vs. Carly Fiorina for LGBT  Hell; Senator  Barbara Boxer and Fiorina Tie

Now while many of you feel “over the democrats” the Boxer v Fiorina race will be the most important in November’s general election.  Barbara Boxer incumbent Democratic Senator for California and one of the very few reliable and progressive allies for LGBT legislation in the Senate is facing her first ever terrifying (for us)  challenge, by Fiorina, ex CEO of Hewlett Packard, who, in my opinion is either Homophobic or a panderer  of the worst kind.

The latest Field Poll shows Barbara Boxer in a statistical tie with Carly Fiorina. “Now, we have further confirmation of just what a serious challenge we are facing. Although this is within the margin of error, there’s no question that we are in the toughest Boxer campaign ever. ” says Rose Kapolczynski
Campaign Manager for the Boxer Campaign.

Yesterday, Survey USA released their latest California Senate poll — and it is more confirmation that the race is now too close to call. Fiorina is actually ahead of Barbara by two points, 47% – 45%.

The campaign blasted out an email and is asking for support. I encourage all my readers here at LGR to send at least $5.00  – PLEASE let us support a true friend and at the same time ask for more profound and overt leadership on our issues in the Senate.  The gay community has always supported the Senator and we  MUST continue to do so, regardless of our disappointment with the Democrats and President Obama.

Without Boxer in the Senate forget about equality!

Send the Senator Boxer’s campaign your $5.00, no matter where you are – if we wait on the sideline in essence the gay community will be defeated again by the millions of dollars that corporate anti-gay right wing motivators will pour into this campaign, not to mention the millions that

Fiorina will use of her own money in her power hungry quest – which WILL harm us all directly.

I would like to make a point that will, I hope, add to a lot of this about Fiorina.

As CEO of HP, she came close to running the company into the ground. In the end, HP had to bribe her to step down as CEO. She has about as much business savvy as a brick. She is not an expert on business and not a good choice for Senate based upon that.

That is my two cents on this.

That’s why as a movement we have to come together and join forces. There are so many small campaigns for different pieces of legislation, ENDA, the repeal of DADT and DOMA, UAFA, et al. The elected officials can only pass so much legislation each session and it can’t all be for us. How do they choose what to focus on when we can’t even seem to? That’s why I’m so excited about the American Equality Bill. I hope that really gets a sponsor and gets going. If we are added to the civil act of 1964 baring all discrimination against us, and we get DOMA repealed, then we pretty much have met our ultimate goal. I don’t like being obligated to a party either, but I would never vote republican anyway, and unfortunately all of America is really confined to a two party system, not just us. The rebublicans have proven themselves to be our enemies and actively work to keep us oppressed. If the alternative is a party we have to nag and badger to get anywhere so be it.

I am unsure at the moment how I feel about supporting politicians, I am extremely disappointed in the majority of the so called representatives of the PEOPLE. They all want our (gay) votes for reelection, but leave us suffering afterwards for years, and years, decades of  indecisiveness. This time around we need more than ‘empty promises’ – “NO guts – NO glory”. The relationship between voter/constituent and politician has to be re-established; contrary to a sometimes distorted vision, it is NOT a one-way street! Trust must be earned, and obviously nothing is for free in this life, not even for politicians.

Thanks for your comments Greta, all appreciated. remember while we may not see results as we would like to – we must remember that this Senator like some others co sponsor legislation that impacts our rights. For one example. Barbara Boxer Co Sponsors UAFA – immigration rights fot LGBT couples. Without her that sponsorship goes away and we take a BIG step back. Most people who randomly say I will not support politicians do not understand what a rough battle it is for them to get any piece of legislation through. I would be very disappointed in our community if we gave BUSH his 8 years (which had the impact of 100 years in terms of the mess) and only gave OBAMA and his admin a mere 2 years before deciding on this stuff. I too am so angry. I expected executive order and LGBT magic. I still expect that, but I cannot give up on those who actually do care and are willing to face the battle. Please help!!!!

As much as I support LGBT equality, I just don’t think I can bring myself to vote for Barbara Boxer. I’m just bummed that Tom Campbell didn’t get the nomination. *SIGH*. Another 3rd party vote, I guess.

Clearly you do not support LGBT Equality with absolute commitment because if you did you would realize how critical this is. Third Party votes got BUSh elected. remember. I am asking you with the wound of inequality our daily pain, to reconsider. Nonetheless I respect your rights, and do appreciate your commenting, mel

Of course I’m very committed to LGBT equality. I’m just angry that being a LGBT citizen means that I am somehow obligated to vote for someone I don’t want to represent me. I don’t feel comfortable with one candidate “baiting” me for my vote for being.gay when I’m so unsatisfied with everything else she has to offer. I don’t feel like I have any “equality” when I’m pressured into voting for a particular candidate because of my sexual orientation.

However, I do understand your concern and I appreciate your deep commitment to LGBT rights. Let’s just hope for the best.

Mel, I understand your concern about the implications of a Barbara Boxer loss and I appreciate your commitment to the fight for our rights.  However, I take issue with your notion that I’m not fully committed to LGBT equality. To me, equality does not just mean that I have equal rights on paper as a gay person. It also means that I have the opportunity to vote for a candidate that represents my views on a number of issues that are important to me rather than being obligated to vote just based on my sexual orientation. I don’t want to be “baited” by a party or candidate just for being an LGBT voter and suppress my opinions on other matters. Once again, I understand your perspective and I wish there were better answers. – Muffy

Muffy I apologize sincerely for my knee jerk reaction – my oft flaw – it invoked thoughts of Bush. You are right the other issue are of paramount importance too and you have that right. Who knows Fiorina may be better on some of them – that said, I feel so marginalized as a lesbian and my children are so horribly impacted by their lack of first class citizenry despite being Americans, that for me EQUALITY and CIVIL rights supersedes all issues. I am sorry for imposing that on you – which in essence is what my remark did. Again thanks for taking me to task. Mel

[BTW I didn't mean to post two responses. I got a bit confused. ]

It’s too bad that, despite all the bazillion dollars pumped into the ads this election (thanks to a millionaire CEO running), there is actually very little attention given to LGBT rights. You sound like someone very knowledgable and passionate about equality I do thank you for alerting voters to the issue. I would love for LGBT Californians to read the pleas of yourself, as well as those of others with different views, to make a well informed decision. Here’s to hoping for the best!
