The National Organization for Marriage pulled into Indiana today and had a good day. They had forty people show up. Some two hundred, or five times, the number of people showed up to protest NOM’s appearance. The main speaker of the day was Maggie Gallagher, since apparently Brian Brown has not been as photogenic as Maggie has been. Her appearance may even be why NOM got such a huge turn out.
A tip to Box Turtle Bulletin from Lindoro Almaviva included a long rundown of what happened at the rally today. Apparently, one person from NOM’s side, apparently, did try to get the protesters to shout insults, but only a few people engaged him. Later he apparently shoved a woman, but did so away from the police. The Almaviva said “I guess it is OK for them to shove people around but not OK for us to protest them, the ironies of the world.”
Apparently the counter protesters were rowdy. “They consistently drowned the speakers with the usual chants of ‘We want marriage equality’, ‘No equality no peace’ and the such, but also they shouted slogans like ‘We love you NOM’ and ‘Welcome to Indianapolis.’” There were seven to ten police officers there, but no fence to separate the protesters from the counter protesters.
Apparently, one of the speakers for NOM stated “even the protesters showed up to our rally”, and the reply from the counter protesters was “we want you to see what a real majority looks like.”
According to Lindoro Almaviva, after the rally was over, the counter protesters decided to hold a real demonstration demanding marriage equality. Apparently several of the people who showed up to support NOM slunk away “like someone committed a party foul.”
Apparently, NOM has spent several thousands of dollars and months prepping, promoting and booking the tour and so far they have had just over two hundred people show up. So far, forty appears to be their largest tally, and a simple Facebook page and invite netted some two hundred attendees to counter protest NOM, and did it in a matter of days.
So far, NOM’s pathetic showing has done little to inspire confidence in their stance. While they are often able to threaten, fear-monger, cajole, and even rig elections in their favor, they cannot seem to get a lot of people to come out to support their homophobic beliefs.
Still, the National Organization for White-Heterosexual-Only-Marriage will be rolling into another town soon enough.
