Boycott of NBC Over Wedding Contest Discrimination Begins

07/05/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
The Boycott NBC for Wedding Contest Discrimination has launched it’s Facebook Page finally. The GLAAD news release on this stated

“The contest is called: ‘TODAY’s Wedding: Modern Love,’ but the application form only lists “bride” and “groom” as the options for couples to choose. The blog ‘Good As You’ first alerted GLAAD to this issue. It concerned us because the Today Show opened up its ‘Hometown Wedding’ contest to same-sex couples in states where they could legally marry back in 2005. That happened following GLAAD’s outreach and we assumed this contest was also open to our community.”

Unfortunately, The Today Show’s latest contest is being opened only to those weddings which can be conducted in New York. Unfortunately, a recent attempt to get same-sex marriages passed in New York failed due to the major problems within the New York Assembly. Three of the four states and the one nation that boarders New York do allow for marriages between people of the same sex. Originally, the Today Show did not have language in their information on the contest specifying that the marriage had to be performed in New York.

One of the most visibly open lesbians in the news business works for NBC’s organization. Dr. Rachel Maddow hosts her own program on MSNBC. Currently, she is in Afghanistan, and it is unlikely that she would comment on this issue due to a number of cross departmental problems that it could bring up.

The emotional issues brought up by marriage have made some organizations leery about promoting what the Christian Right feels is a perversion of a religious rite while many others feel that marriage is a legal and economic contract between two people.
