“I know that we’re not a traditional family like the Murphy’s or the lesbian coven down the street. . .” As many fans of Futurama know, the series has returned from the dead for the third time. At the end of the movie “Into the Wild Green Yonder”, the ship plunged into a wormhole never to be seen again. . .until the first episode of the newest season which saw them back at Earth and crashing headlong into the ground. The sci-fi show has tackled all kinds of issues from flag desecration to environmental destruction. It has enjoyed regular visits from former Vice-President Al Gore who said in the movie “Bender’s Big Score”, “finally, I get to save the Earth with deadly lasers rather than deadly slide shows.”
In the third season episode “I Dated A Robot,” Fry dates a robot version of Lucy Liu in which there is a video detailing the horrible possible problems of a human dating a robot. Of course, the video mirrors a lot of the propaganda that exists with regards to homosexuality.
Well, Futurama is returning to this subject and it will, undoubtably, give people like Congressional candidate from New Hampshire Bob Giuda and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins a whole new possibility to strike fear into people with regards to lesbians and gays getting married. In next weeks “Proposition Infinity”, Bender and a lot of other robots push for the legalization of marriage between humans and robots. A recent episode of Futurama called “Attack of the Killer App” saw some of the problems with recycling ewaste which, while comedically presented, is a problem because a lot of it gets shipped to third world nations where it poisons the air and water that people need.
Futurama has showcased several episodes which feature LGBT themes without necessarily being about LGBT individuals. In the fifth season show “Bend Her”, Bender undergoes a robot sex change operation. For the year that it was created, namely 2003, it is a pretty decent episode with regards to transgender issues, though it does showcase a certain amount of unethicalness with regards to Bender’s reasoning for becoming a woman.
Though the relationship between Amy Wong and Kiff is, basically, straight, as Kiff is male, the dynamics of their relationship have always seemed far more lesbian than straight. Kiff is very female in his emotional structure, and even in one episode becomes pregnant from touching Leela’s hand. “Proposition Infinity” starts with an argument between Amy and Kiff, who have been having relationship difficulties ever since the movie “The Beast With A Billion Backs.” “Proposition Infinity” will air on 8 July 2010 at 10:00 pm on Comedy Central.
