NOM Heads Out On Tour, Starting In Augusta, Maine

07/12/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
The National Organization for Marriage is heading out onto the road with their “One Man, One Woman” tour. These rallies will be starting in Augusta, Maine, where NOM succeeded in buying an electoral result which ended up overturning the same-sex marriage law that had been passed successfully in that state last year. NOM President Brian Brown has stated that they chose Maine for the first stop on their tour because it represented a major victory site for them. According to Brown “We felt it was important to start where people had voted to protect marriage but also to show that this isn’t over.”

Betsy Smith, executive director of EqualityMaine, has a counter rally scheduled for that day to show that “NOM knows we are going to continue to fight for fairness and equality for all Maine families.” The final results in the Maine election were statistically close enough that the issue may end up with a defeat for NOM the next time that is brought up. EqualityMaine has been working to educate Maine citizens as to the importance of marriage equality. “We will continue to do what we have been doing, which is having one-on-one conversations with friends, family and co-workers about why all Mainers should have these protections,” Smith stated.

Currently, NOM, which donated $1.9 million to Stand for Marriage Maine, has refused to hand over their donor lists despite court rulings that they had to do so. Brown, who succeeded Maggie Gallagher as President of NOM, has vowed to fight the court rulings demanding that they hand over their donor lists and claimed that this was nothing more than a “witch hunt”.

“What’s happening is the courts are threatening all of the votes by people to protect marriage,” Brown complained with regards to the recent court ruling determining that parts of the Defense of Marriage Act were unconstitutional. No matter how many people vote for a particular issue, if it is unconstitutional it is unconstitutional and Brown may want to get use to that right now. Of course, the idea of actually following the law tends to make Brown and his group queasy since they have done all kinds of immoral things in order to make sure that they get to keep lesbians and gays second class citizens.

Of course, so far, no one has seen Gallagher walking around with a scarf on her head as per Biblical injunction, and there is no word as to whether or not they have been enjoying lobster dinners which would violate Leviticus in a big way.
