Somebody get me a babelfish! A pastor involved in the National Organization for Marriage’s little rally for marriage discrimination in Providence, Rhode Island slipped into speaking in tongues the other day. In between calls upon God, apparently the Holy Spirit caught up with the pastor and he started speaking in tongues. It is not hard to speak in tongues, at least for this Pagan. I have a defect within my brain which scrambles my language center rather badly. I have to concentrate on speaking English, and I sometimes slip into ‘tongues’ if I get really flustered or frustrated. Sometimes, I just slip into it in order to work through the blockage and find the right word. When I trance, I also slip into it.
It is harder, of course, to transliterate what I say in ‘tongues’ than to speak it. Here, however, is just a sample “I’nshii lamn ga’r tan oukria fajdira im’dikay’a ma’kutah faguri’a gu’tada nohkuria majshgooria katra nogola toparia bashu’ta a’n ah irriah ba no’uku fasthotah.” What does it mean? I have no clue. All I know is that I can do this, and since I am a Pagan, I doubt that it has anything to do with the Holy Spirit catching up with me to make me speak in tongues.
