Last Friday (I’m late! I’m sorry, I went away for July 4th & I hope you all did too) Melissa Etheridge filed to dissolve her domestic partnership with Tammy Lynn Michaels. One would think that this was a natural progression of events, since the two have publicly announced that their relationship is over. Melissa has said that the split was mutual and has also, more subtly, said that Tammy was a ‘less than whole person’ in a tiny 1/8 of a page article in People. However, Tammy has taken to her blog to tell her side of the story. Tammy says that the two had agreed not to file for the dissolution, for whatever reason and now she is broke and needs to borrow money from friends for gas. This is ridiculous, Tammy was married to a millionaire. As any Wendy William’s fan will tell you, you need to have “fuck you” money. Like, if your spouse leaves you, you need to have a bank account where you have been saving for such an occasion. Tammy would be a fool not to have one.

Tammy also says that she is the one ‘raising the kids’ despite the fact that Melissa filed for joint custody and has been taking the kids on a regular basis.

Tammy also blames Melissa for her decision to stop acting. In late 2001, Tammy says she realized Melissa’s kids from a previous marriage needed HER to be a stay at home mom. I don’t understand how this makes ANY sense. Tammy didn’t have the twins until 2006, soooo why would she stop acting in 2001? Because she landed Melissa, was loaded and didn’t feel like working anymore. Which is fine, I don’t judge that, but don’t blame someone else for your decision. Tammy blames Melissa, but she should own her decisions.

late 2001

we were standing on a porch, outside, under the stars. we were talking about life, and what was coming up in the future, and schedules, and dreams, and building. she had a tour coming up, but the kids had school, and i had some auditions coming… what to do, what to do, what to do….

and that’s when i sort of knew. those kids needed someone at home, someone stable, someone who wasn’t jetting off all the time, and scrambling in and out. i knew that was like, to be a kid, and have people on revolving doors. so i stepped in, truly thinking i was doing the right thing.

“you know what?” i said. “do you want me to take a year off? take care of the kids? i can be here when you’re gone, get them at school, bake for them, do the school stuff, and just catch them when you’re not here. want me to do that?”

her face lit up like i was giving her a present she wanted but could never name. “would you do that??? you would do that???”

“sure! i’ve always wanted to make a home anyway! i’ll make a home for you and me and the kids, and you go and do your thang with your guitar!”

we laughed and hugged, and she said it was perfect, and it was what she had always wanted anyways, but didn’t want to ask anybody to do it for her….. make her a home…. etc. and that night was perfect. sitting on the porch, under the stars, back when we lived on the house on Mandeville canyon, near the ocean.

i gave up my managers, agents, contacts, all that good stuff, because i stepped directly into potty training a small boy, and carrying around a small girl on my hip. both excellent souls. and i was a very huge part in raising them for many many years while She with the Guitar focused on her Guitar.

I get asked a lot if I am on Team Tammy or Team Melissa, I’m not on either. Both the women are making a mistake to make this so public. They have twins who will, no doubt, be introduced to “the internets” sometime soon and realize that their mommies acted like raging fools. Ahem, not that my opinion matters, but when you put your relationship out there, people will comment.
