The Today Show Refuses To Allow Same-Sex Couples To Enter Wedding Contest Because Of New York’s Lack Of Marriage Equality

07/04/10-by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
Greg and Jonathan had entered the Ultimate Wedding Contest through Crate Barrel and were awarded second place despite the company’s reluctance to include same-sex couples. The problem now is not with Crate and Barrel, but with NBC and the Today Show. According to the Today Show, the couple cannot be awarded second place because they cannot get married in the state of New York. Of course, this is in large part because of the problems which ensued last year with the New York Assembly.

New York is bordered by three states which allow same-sex marriages. Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut all allow for these nuptials legally. According to Jonathan’s Facebook message “Sounds very Yesterday Show to me, and definitely not a Modern Wedding!”

The couple have a plan to send a message to the producers of the Today Show. They would like every engaged couple, same-sex or otherwise, to enter the contest and to place ‘Applicant 1′ and ‘Applicant 2′ for first and last names on the application. Then, because the application requires a quick video, talk about why the Today Show should allow same-sex couples to enter the contest.

Additionally, they together with Phil Attey, have come up with a few additional ways to send a message. The first is to organize this through Facebook (page to be linked in the near future). This page would include information on all of the couples who have entered as well as a petition for single supporters to sign. They are also planning to Twitter Zap the Twitter accounds of Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry and Al Roker.

A PDF file will also be created for people to print out to hold outside Rockefeller Center during taping, and a flash mob is slowly being organized.

“Because the deadline is so soon, I really need some help with all this. I think it is incredibly important to show a united front, we don’t have a problem being the face of this push, but we need to send a unified message. All the help and ideas are appreciated, let see if we can change this!”

If Greg can dance backward in high heels and restricted garments, let them in for goodness sakes.
