The Village People are Angry

07/14/2010- by Natasia Langfelder

Iconic gay singing sensations the Village People are “deeply dismayed” that the YMCA is re-branding and will now go by, the Y. They released a statement via the Huffington Post saying:

“We are deeply dismayed by today’s announcement from the YMCA that they feel a name change and a rebranding are in order after 166 years,” the band said in the statement. “Some things remain iconic, and while we admire the organization for the work they do, we still can’t help but wonder Y.”

I can tell you Y, Village People. Much like the song, the actual YMCA is extremely outdated and even off-putting. It stands for Young Mens Christian Association, which makes the increasingly dynamic centers sound like a relic from the 50′s. There were also YWCAs, for those of you who pay attention to things like that. I was a briefly a member of the Y, so I could go to the gym there. It is cheaper than an actual gym and the facilities are still great, the machines have little tv’s on them, the classes will kick your ass and it’s a great way to meet lesbians. Lesbians at the YMCA??!! Not so much. Lesbians at the Y?!?! Yes, much better. Sorry Village People, but time will continue it’s perpetual march despite your protestations. Luckily, their will always be people “in the Navy.”
