Today, the National Organization for Marriage stopped in Florida. Their sparsely attended Summer Of Marriage has certainly not lived up to its predecessor the Summer of Love. Today, 150 counter-protesters showed up representing fifteen LGBT and non-LGBT, though allied, groups. C.D. Kirven, the co-founder of Get Equal Now lead a prayer during the protest. While she lead the prayer, the LGBT participants fell to their knees. The prayer was for an end to hatred and an embracing of love.
Groups which were there were Stand Up Florida, Get Equal Now, Courage Campaign, Come Out Orlando, Florida Together, HRC, Queer Activist Coalition, ISO, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, MCC Church, and so many others.
According to Kirven: “Who would Jesus Hate? We had a victory in California and we are standing together for marriage equality today. This is not a battle between homosexual against heterosexual..this is a battle of justice against injustice. I would love to sit down with Dr. King who attended NOM’s Atlanta protest to begin a sisterhood between our communities. We must and will be free. Get Equal Now!”
Prejudice in all forms has the same roots, and it is often hard for those who seek to protect their prejudices and the status that those prejudices engender to confront the rationale behind their prejudice. Instead, they are willing to do anything that they can to uphold those prejudices and hatreds in order to protect their status as being better than another group. It is about a lack of empathy, and a lack of willingness to understand. Unfortunately, NOM’s supporters and organizers want to maintain their status even though it is painfully clear that their status is no longer as accepted by society as it once was.

It was an awesome event today in Orlando. I’m so glad I went and so glad the thunderstorms gave way. I can tell you first hand that we were absolutely civil and peaceful, so if you see any comments from NOM to the contrary; they’re absolute lies. It was interesting though that they chose to stay inside the church and not bring their message outside. Who are they hiding from? What are they hiding from? At one point I tried to enter the church. I was questioned by an older woman if I was there for their service. I told her I was. She next asked me if I was with the protesters outside. To that I simply said, I’m an American citizen who wants to come into the church. She then said that there is no protesting allowed. I told her I didn’t come inside to protest, I came inside to hear their message. She then said, “You’re with ‘them,’” as if I had cooties or something. I told her that I was a citizen who wished to enter the church to hear their message. She then called me a protester and said I would need to leave. I then suggested to her that she leave as well since her group was protesting themselves. She said they’re not protesting. I pointed out that they’re (her group… well one singularly sole individual) was holding a sign outside which to me sure looks like protesting. She then said, “accept God and God’s word.’ I asked her, “I’m confused, I’m to accept your God but then I’m not allowed in the Lord’s house?” At any rate; back outside, car after car that drove by were honking their horns in support of us. Like Bridgette said in her article above, there was maybe at most a dozen of them and at least 150 of us. There was even an entire family… husband, wife, and their two sons standing with us in support. The two young boys carrying signs were asked by the news crew why they were there. The youngest of the two replied, ‘because I think a boy should be able to marry a boy and a girl should be able to marry a girl and anybody should be able to marry anybody they want.’ Such a poignant and succinct remark from a boy who was maybe 10 years old at most. So all in all, I would say it wasn’t such a good day and a good stop for NOM on their Summer of Marriage [Hate] Tour.
